I do
not consider the Executive business, of
the Senate of much emaaluence, and 1 this!
the country would be much better pleased ns
well as relieved from some very excusable appre
hensPms, if that body would quietly disperse and
leave the mind of the nation to recover as it best
may from the effects of the past action of Con
gress But this high and dignified branch of the
legislature has a very manifest yearning for some
degree of Legislative power independent of its
colleague. There has been a struggle going on
for the last four days-on this pretension: To
Lilay, after a long discussion a resolution by Mr.
Badger, on voting to themselies four thousand
dollars in the shape of Congressional Globes,
was laid on the table, 211 to 14. 'But to &matt r
oot the influence of so correct and honest a pro
needing upon the public mind—a resolution seas
passed giving the secretary, clerk,. messengers,
pager, watchmen, and other petty officeri in and
about the Senate Chamber, two hundred and fif
ty dollars a piece in addition to their regular
pay for the session. Mr.. Clay, Clareird Dusk,
and Mr. Atchison, were the principal chninpions
for the boys, the two Indiana Senator 4, Bright
and Whitcomb appeared for the country. I
thought Ale statements and arguments of the lat
ter perfectly conclusive, but they made no im
pression whatever on the sympathies of the ma
jority. The boys got their hands into theatrong
box with little difficulty and drew out the usual
amount; Bright said it would take twenty thou
sand dollars out of the treasury, but the friends
of the boys good naturally confessed they did
not care if it did, for it was going 'to iheir'wid
owed mothers any how. This
. only - illustrates
the extended applicability of the - Elder Weltar's
admonition to "beware of the widdera." it
should he chalked in golden letters on the desk
of every Sens-ter, for it appears that such grave
and reverend solicitors are no•more proof against
the wiles of the widdors than the susceptible
swain to whom Mr. W. originally addressed the
warning.„ .

Mr. iltulerwood attempted to bring in some

Twenty-one of the:crew of the ship Isaac Webb, which cleared from this point yesterday.

to make a revolt. T he counsel on behalf of the

' clinched Captain Cropper by the throat, and
'another struck him several times with a belaying

very violent language, and refilled to do duty.
The Captain was obliged to arm himself with
pistols, whereupon the parties dispersed, bat still
disobeyed orders. These facts beingproved, the'

in irons, to await an examination. The Ship will'
