HOME I%lATftts SECOND iikND STOMES.-A few of the second hand stores, kept by unprincipled men. may be ranked among the greatest nuisances in Pitts by) git. This it more esperully the case with . EOM where old , iron, copper, brass, Lc., are bought from any person, young or oil, who nay bring them for sale, since ft, encourages :votng children to pilfer articles of little value, it is tray, but still the pruetice.is nu less prejudicial to their morality. We were led to make these observa tions by scenes which have recently occurred at the' Mayor's Of f ice. Two little fellows were locked up in the watchi house on It charge oe stealing hooks. They wept and begged to lie re leased, and were at last.let off un telling wherg they had sold their plunder.: Upwards of forty volumes were discpvered bidhe police ufficer.4 in various shops, where they had been sold for a tride. The boys in question were mere childrein 'and those who bought from theta should have made strict inquiry bow they came by the books; bat no questions were, nsked. and a mere trine given, so that the purchasers could sell them for half their real value, and still make an enormous -profit. Every person. who is engaged inn business of this kind—buying from young persons who make a constant practice of selling little articles, .tillould at once be arrested us n receiver of stolen goals, for it is impossible that children who, day after day, and week after week, offer books and small articles .of furniture fur sale, could come by them honestly. A few days ago, a dealer in old iron,' who Leaps an establishment on Smithfield street, was arrested. In his house was found a number of. large and small copper kettles, some batterrod to pieces,' apparently to prevent recognition,— others uninjured. These kettles have all been identified since t hat time by various citizens as their property, and they had been stolen either by dishonest servants or by mere children. His honor the Mayor bound the dealer over for his appearance at the neat COurt of Quarter Ses sions, and he has since, wo learn, relinquished the business. Our city is at present infested by a gang of juvenile thieves, who do an incalculable degree of mischief to the cause of public morality, inas much as they induce the children of some of our most respectable citizens to plunder their parents, and then point out where they can dispose of their booty. A very estimable friend, whose young son, only eleven years of age, has been seduced by those young rascals, yesterday gave as an account of their enormities, but we think that, guilty as they may be, the vile wretches who encourage them to steal for the sake of ma king a few dollars by their crimes, are tenfold more culpable, and ass trust that our police will use every exertion to ferret oU't and arrest them.— We are sure if they do so, they will secure what they will well merit, the esteem and approbation , of our citizens. We were in error in stating, yesterday, that the Irene was insured in the Citizens' Company. She was insured in the Firemen's Association for $3,000. Iler freight was insured partly in the Delaware Mutual, pertly in the Western, partly in the North American, and a small amount, not exceeding :$3OO, in the Citizens. Tun JOHN QCINCY ADAHL—The last number of the Steubenville Herald, contains the follow ing notice: ..The Steamer J. Q. Adams in consequence of injuries received at Pittsburgh on Mobday, will not leave this port far a few days. . The hour of her arrival and departure mill be duly announ ced.- The J. Q. He woo ataut going out again, and went with his brother in-law down Diamond Alley to get bin horse.— He entered the stable, but in a moment came tottering out, declaring that his horse had kick ed him. He immediately fainted, and was car ried into a neighboring how. Doctors Morgan and Murdock were called in, and after being cup ped, a reaction toot place; whieh was followed by convulsions, and he is now lying in a' very dangerous condition. There is no mark upon his person, but it is supposed that the- horse kicked him in thestomach. BURGIAIIS AND ARSON.—The grocery store of Mr. William Buchanan, at the corner of Wylie and Chatham streets, was entered by some bur glars, on Thursday. They obtained admittance by the cellar, and going up the stairs, cut a bole through the door communicating with the store, and unbolting it, .entered. After rifling the drawer, In which they found a small amount of money, they took whatever-articles pleased their fancy, and either fired the store, or left a candle bur4ing so that it communicated to some com bustible materials. The fire, being smothered, did not burn rapidly, but Mr. B. and his fainily, who slept above stairs, were awakened by the fall of a beam, which stretched across the ceil ing, from which a number of herds and flitches of bacon were suspended. Alarined at the noise, he opened the door, but the apartment was at once filled with a suffocating vapor, and all re treat was cut off. Mr. Buchanan had been for some time unwell, - and was unable to help his wife and child' to escape. Mrs. 13. rushed through the =coke, with her child in her &MN, and got upon a balcony, which fortunately was im front of the house. Her child and herself were• then taken, at considerable risk to both parties, through the window of the next house Mr. Buchanan, olso, though with great diffi culty, managed to reach the balcony, and jumped down to the ground, though, fortunately without sustaining any serious injury. The flames were confined, by the efforts of the fireman to the room where they originated. The damage done to the building is fully covered by insurance. Mr. Buchanan's stock was insured to the amount of twelve handred•dollars, in the Dela ware Mutual Insurance Company. ,MnJor yesterday com mitted a colored man, - named Jacob Hopkins, to prison, on a charge of vagrancy. Jacob is a I resident of Hayti, and was ono of those idlers against whom the Alderman fulminated suchitor rible denunciations a short time ago. A number, becoming alarmed, engaged to work on various steamboats, and many were committed to prison for long periods. Not so with out hero, who ; escaped going to prison, but had a t soul that re volted at all meniall.occupationth still he was not above "assuming a 'virtue" which ho had not, and thrice a day,, for more than a week; did he pass the Alderman's office, with a whitewash brush and bucket in his band. Ho was observed always to cast a sly glance , into the office as he passed, and give his bucket and brush is certsin 'triumphal flourish, an if he had been invested with a new dignity, from the fact of his having turned his attention to honest labor. But, alas poor Jacob was a married man. r end his better half could not keep a secret. For nine long days was it constantly on the tip of her tongue, until her husband, for the ninth time, get drunk yes terday, upon which she posted off to his har.or, and informed him that her husband was merely " throwing dust in hie eyes," and that, the brush and bucket were borrowed for the occasion. This settled the business, and Jacob. having enacted the part of a whitewasher, was nom oil to leant his trade in eatnest, in the prison, by whitewash ing the cells there.
