FROM HARRISBITRO
IConoewnarmr• of the /hUr Plt.burgh
Mr. Hoge presented a petition from the. citi
zens of Sandy Lake township, Mercer chanty,
for the passage of n Law to restrain disorderly
conduct and sports on the Sabbath day. •
Mr. Walker, a remonstrince from the Erie liar
against" any enlargement of the sixth judicial
district.
Mr. Myers, a petition from Armstrong county
for the incorporation of the Kittanning Bonk.
Mr. Lawrence, the pktition of Amos Addis,
praying for compensation for his invention of
schutes in dams t Mr. L. also read in place a bill
on the .same subject.
the resolution relative - to the claim of John
Klica taken
.op, on motion of Mr. Myers,
amended and passed.
The bill laying out and causing to be opened a
public road froth Peach to Liberty street, Erie,
was taken up and passed.
In the House no business wan transacted, the
whole morning lancing been occupied in debate,
upon various resolutions which were brought up.
You will observe by the vote I sent you-yester
day on the ten hour law that the. bill wets defeat
ed: the votes of the senator, from Delaware,
and Philadelphia city and county. Your senator,
Dr. Carothers, made a very excellent speech in
defence of the hill showed the condition in
which the manufacturers were placed stated
the number of petitions that had been presented
for the passage of the law, and that not a single
remonstrance had been beard of, and presented
the subject in its Various lights, but it was of no
avail; and the bill was sacrificed, nod without
reason. It was a purely local question, which
the persons interested ought to have had the
privilege of determining, npd the main excuse
given by these senators for voting against it, is
not based upon, and does not relate to the mer
its of the bill. A course such ns they base now
ursued, should be taken by the Senators from
the Allegheny district, when some question is at
stake of local interest to Philadelphia :alone.—
I f their votes should then be the means of defeat
ing the Philadelphians in their schoenen, it will
be but n very fit return for their recent actions.
A day or two ago, Mrs Isabella Wetherill. of
Phil. County, presented to the Legislature her
remonstrance to the granting of the 'petition of
her' husband, Dr. W. Wetherill for a divorce. -
The remonstrance is very eloquently written,
and has, I hope, sealedlibe fate of the unrighte
ous request her husband has made of the Legis
lature=This bill was before it last Session, and
then defeated, and a similar fate should again
consign it to the tomb. The parties have been
married 25 years. and have • had 15 children, of
whom .12 are still ;living. A year or two ago
Mrs. Weiherill wan compelled by stern necessity
to leave his house, nod an agreement was mad
by the parties that they'should hereafter live
apart. This not suiting the_Dr. for well-known
reason, he has made an application for divorce,
and has made in his memorial the most scanda
lous charges against his wife.
Her memorial is a reply to these charges, and
meets them severally with proof of innocence,
and begs the legislature to save her children from
disgrace, and her character from obliquy. As I
heard her memorial read, I saw tears starting
in the eyes of many of those who can feel for
the cause of ii faithful, but basely slandered, and
deeply injured wife. The indignation of the
llouse was strongly but properly aroused against
the revilers of her innocence, and I hope nothing
will be found to save the application from
overwhelming defeat, The causes are so base
less, the charges are so false, and the insinua
tions are so uncalled for and gratuitous, that the
legislature will not dare to give the bill their
'Auction.

The fnignies Constitution and Brandywine are
about to he thoroughly overhauled at the Smith

The ship Columbus which arrived at this port

Great inconvenience is still experienced by the
small dealers, from the scarcity of silver, and I
observethat several parties have breed , thin

The Stork Market is again animated with the
spirit of speculation. I have not ascertained to
my satisfaction whether this is the beginning of
the grand upward movement for the Spring, or
if 'it iionly a spirit which after the first efferves

Belotuis a statement of tho most prominent
facts in the ease.
From the great accumulation of testimony,
(mote than six hundred pages,) from the general
nature and indefiniteness of the charges preferred,
a somewhat lengthy reply, covering all the char

stances, and is herewith presented.
Mr. Day, who has, been , the 'prime rnovfr
in this whOle affair, is, and hos long been, using
the invention patented . % Mr. Chaffee, and, as
stated by one of the witnesses in the testimony.
is the only, man, with a single exception, known
to be using Chaffee's invention without paying
for it.
This fact, considered in its proper light,
shows the incompetency of Such a witness Co tes
tify against the extension of the patent in goes
lion, and how much reliance may be placed up
on his statements, in these charge. s, unlessgon
firmed by other competent testimony.
