will enable that company to early at very low

a large business from the Ohio river in low

it can curry no cheaply as to defy competition.-

ADFCI`III 4 —The -New York Courier and Enqui

half as many houses as Philadelphia
Bufagain, it is urged that, according to the

giving use average of 13i persons to each house,
wherus Philadelphia has 61.20'2 dwellings, giv

this strange anomaly actually exist• asks the

virtue in official figures. and it is not •o strange
either. It is capable of It very simple explana
tion. The houses of this city, on account of
their superior height. breadth, and depth. have.
on the average, twice the capacity of the houses
in Philadelphia. The former are usually nem
pied by two or more families, the latter seldom
by more than ear. Ereey one. too, knows that
notwithstanding the far gre.:4 - ..er size of our duel
fings, there is very much less house room in New
Yorkthan in Philadelphia, as is most conclusive
ly shorn by the fact that rent for the same
space is nearly, if not quite, twice as high as it
is there. These simple facts are enough to dis
pel the editors "strange anomaly" into thin air
The truth is, that instead of there being, as the

the number of dwellings and population, the
one is no kind of criterion of the other. T yke

Everything that has been ((toted with refer

has been correct, with the exceptionof its safety.
The• water in decomposed or resolved into its gas

great difficulty is found in governing the electric
currents in their accumulations and discharge
'in the, or at the electrodes—the continuous Va

all mechanical skill that has yet been Draught
to bear on the discovery.
With a certain electrical state of atmosphere,
the apparatus has been known to work for weeks
without any difficulty; but, immediately that a
change of excess would occur, repulsion would
take place at the electrodes, and they would melt
like so much wax.
