' , There has horn and there is yet a warm end 'cloe competition for the Brazilian mission. It mutt been generally roportisl that the nomination of non, IL C. Schenck has been made. But this isml error. No noiminittion has yet been made, though I believe the claims of Mr. Schenck are as favorably considered as those of any other gentleman in ur out of Congress. The infamous Brazilian slave Uncle has reach ed such a point. of enormity, and has become such It blot upon tint fair reputation of American coinnierce. that :mink adilitianal importance is conferred - upon the i•opresentation of our repel, Inc at the Brazilian court — lee need there a most tilde anti active minister. who will adopt severe and efficient ineasuries for the extirpation of the traffic, so far as our vessels and flag are con cerned. Mr. Tod, it appears from ii recent doe crinent,4llints exerted himself with commendable zeal to rescue the faniettnil honor of his 'country from this foul inn mtatnini, Intl as he is a derni,- .vratin partizan. a 'pointed as such, acid neither claiming nor entit ed to exemption from the Mile under which ho ob mined his place, he will doubt less coins home in the course of a few months. The correspondence bet en Mr. Tod and the department, just publishml, present: a dark and, to an American, a most humiliating picture of the present condition of the traffic in human beings. I will refer to a few facts In this andon billing expire. There is no tree and legitimate commerce be tween Africa and Brazil in which American ves sels can be engaged, yet the records of the con sulate at Rio Janiero allow that there have been, within the last Cone years, no less than ninety three clearances of such vessels from that port alone, and betwee fifty and sixty arrivals in the. ports of that pro nee of Brazil. Nearly all the ii oat-goinevessels and been ascertained to have gone on elan• trail ng voyages, and many-of them had been captured by British and American cruisers with slaves.„pn board. The case of two small American vesils, under 250 tons, are par ticularly describml. On the smallest of them Will slaves taken front Africa, and 246 of them having been murdered by suffocation and famine, 1,11 the voyage, the remainder were landed nit it Briztlian port- The larger vessel, on one voyage, 'ailed from the slave factory with nearly 1200 eleven on board, and the voyage being a short one, a comparatively small number of them were murdered, and more than a thousand victims were landed in Brazil. Both these vessels and ninny others successfully and notoriously en gaged ip this business, nailed under the Ameri can flag. - Bat the ordinary .metliod of proccing is this. 'Vessels are built at our northern Ports, or at Baltimore, of light burthen and very rapid, sail-' era. They are sent out to Brazil under pretence of lawful commerce, and when arrived there, are secretly sold, to ha delivered on the coast of Af rica. They sail to that coast ander the Ameri can Bag, with tine provisions, water, and imple monk, of the devilish slave traffic under American colors, and when the cargo is ready to be placed' 11111 truant, a new owner appears, with anew Cap. min, ordinarily a•Portuguese or Brazilian, and sometimes IL LIVIIVrCW, hat not aliniye. Then the Portuguese of.!Broriliiin 1.17, is run up, and the alaser depart". with lier cargo of living and panting freight. Thus is our flat desecrated and outraged. It came up this morning, and Mr. Hale opposed it, ironically, ns giving rise to agitation upon the slave question. He said that tr was quite impos sible to talic s of the traffic' in blares without some times speaking of the 'object of that trade.. He brought up the secret circular, reading it from the intelligencer, and was proceeding to describe the nets and influences hy which it was got up. He did not see how men who' had signed ;that covenant against agitation, could come in with this resolution. He was replied to by Clay and by Foote, who both avowed that they had signed the secret eir , „ cular, and believed that it was a good thing to put down and keep down disturbers of the country, t , • • The debate wals continued At considerable length, sometimes on the merits of the secret circular, and sometimes on the merits of the slave trade. Jeff. Davis and some others ,observ ed that they had not before seen the circular, and they thought we had no business to interfere in the foreign shire trade, Mr. Hale interposed r a motion directing an inquiry into the operation of existing laws, but it: was voted down. Mr. Clay's resolution was then adopted, ayes 49. noes G. The. House spent some time to day in commit. tee of the Whole ; upon the bailor supnlying de ficiencies in appropriations. Mr. Hampton made a very able and conclusive speech upon the gen eral subject of the tariff, exposing the defects of the existing law, and showing the necessity of systen which would effectially protect the suf fering industry of the country. I will refer to • it more at length in another letter. Mr. ' Benton is no doubt ere this defeated, and must prepare to go into private life at the and of the ;present session. By our last advices the Benton and aitti-Benton democrats had abandon ed their new coalition and compromise candidate, the former returning to their first lore, and the latter to the whig candidate, Geyer. Ho lacked but two votes of an election, which ho no doubt obtained on the first ballot the next morning. Mr. Geyer is a distinguished Whig lawyer of St. Louis, a partner of Hon. Edward .Bates, and a native or Maryland. The friends of Onion; and indeed every Amer ican, whatever may be his views on the politics of the day, lave reason to congratulate themselves, upon the defeat of David L Voles in Florida who has been - defeated for the Senate by a 'gentleman named Mallony. The Latter is said to ;entertain extreme opinions in favor of the "rghts of the South," but any change which takes Yulee mita th 6 Senate, and puts one who has no higher recommendation than beings native of the country in his place cannot but be for the better. The senator elect is either a native of Virginia or of Connectierit frequently boasted of his ha tred of the free states ; and, his preference for foreign interest when in conflict with theirs.
