motion for a new trial in the case of the Com
monwealth vs. Daniel Maqrey, convicted dining

second degree.

Marmot —A motion was made in the Court of
Quarter Sessions, on Saturdsly, for the discharge
of several persons who arwviafined in the Coun
ty Prison, charged with being concerned in a
riot on the Pennsylvania and Ohio Rail Road.
The ground for the motion was alleged to be the
non appearance of the prosecutor. Judge Mc-
Clure 'observed that he could not grant the mo
tion. mats were now matters of every day oc
currence, and he was determined that, so far as
he was concerned, they should be stopped. The
prosecutor would probably appear before tho
next session of the Court. Motion discharged.
The Court. met at o'clock. The jury in
the abduction case ahich occupied all the peg
week, returned with n verdict of "not

the arrest of Mr. Rufus Greene. late Secretary of
the Firemen's insurunce Company of that city,
as a defaulter to that institution in a scan
sir, more than half its capital. The warrant
for his apprehension was issued by Justice Wig
gins, at the instance of the President of the Com
pany, and contains a charge of emlmstlement.—

Probably no event has ever occurred in this
community that created a sensation so painful
nod humiliating as that recorded • ribose. Pic
passed it by in yesterday's paper unnoticed. be=
cause we hod not the heart to speak of it. No
man ever to higher in public estimation. or
enjoyed to a greater extent the confidence of his
fellow men, than didlie who is now incarcerated
in jail. charged with an offence which, if pro
ven, will consign him to a felon's doom. Mr.
Greene is nn Elder in the Second Presbyterian
Church of this city. a member of the Comon Coun
cil of the city g.ivernment, nod occupies the
highest 1 vcc believe, and most honorable positifin
in the Masonic fraternity of this State and in
every station which he had been called to fill,
he hos acquitted himself with distinguished hon
or evincing talents and accomplishment that
command not only respect hot universal admi
ration.
That such a man—One SO useful. so Seeont
plished and so much beloved—should be betray
ed into the commission of n crime so heinous-ne
that charged on Mr. fireene, is tno henrt sick
rang to contemplate--almost too incredible for
belief. Yet, we are compelled to say, from all I
the information we can obtain, that we fear it is
hot too true ! It appear, that the most StUpen.
dolts frauds have been deliberately perpetrated,
and embezzlement made of money and means of
the Institution, to the amount of some eighty
thousand dollars !—perhaps more. It is impos
sible yet to ascertain the precise amount. The
Board of Directors of the Company are ctilligent
ly engaged in We investigation, and continue
to make appalling discoverie<. In the mean
time- the Company—which ha. heretofore stood
in high credit—has entirely causal horsiness. is
calling in its policies and returning the proud
ums. A meeting of the stockholders i. called
for Monday evening. to take the whole matter
under consideration and i.leittie On its future
Course. No time ha, yet been set for the ex
amination of Mr. Greene. In the meantime he
remains in the county jail.
