THE MARKETS.
Wnll Street Review.
Now York, Dee. 17. Tho movement of
pi Ices In today's stock markot wis nn al
most oxnet rupatltlon of thnt of yoster
lny. Tlicro was the mimo broadening,
however, of strength tip to tho Inst hour,
when a sellhiK movement developed which
wiped out practically ull of the oqrllur
tjnlnn and carried some prices below Inst
night. The i unction todiiy whs rather
more gmduul and not quite so seven pt
yesterday, and was followed bv a stead
ier tone just before tho close. Tho sharp
ness and suddenness of last iiIkIiI'h do
I'llno led to thu supposition In urime quar
tets that It wan duo to some coming had
news regarding tho Venezuelan situation,
Today's decline had no suspicions to ac
count for It. Tile early strength In thu
market was due In no small part to tho
relief felt over the failures of yester
day's sinister rumors to realize. The facts
developed over night regarding the Vene
zuelan situation, although containing
Home unfavorable) foatuies, woro so less
threatening than had been feared that
fpeculatlvo sentiment showed encourage
ment; and a disposition to buy stocks was
manifested on that scoie. A number of
npeclal influences also helped tho show
of strength. The passage of the Pennsyl
vania' tunnel franchise by the New York
boaid'of aldermen helped 'the stock of
that company and Its subsldlaiy com
panies. Stocks of other companies with
terminals on the New Jersey shoro of tho
Hudson were also affected. Sugar con
tinued to reflect the hope of benefit from
the Cuban reciprocity treaty, but the
leaders of the f.peculatlve advance were
stocks In which powerful pools are known
to exist. There were rumors current that
t-omo members of these pools had ven
tured to go shott of the storks liu'olved
during the recent decline and were now
liable to be called on for their sharo of
the pool holdings which had figured In
loans of stocks for clnndertlno short
hales. Too purchased by the United
States Steel corporation of the Union
Sleel company was received at first with
mixed emotlous, owing to tho piospect
of a largo bond issue against the pur
chase, but the steel shares .subsequently
became prominent factors in the advance.
Jteports from Philadelphia, of a coming
gas, electric and traction merger had a
rather disturbing Influence as does oven-
development threatening further largo
uyndlcate requirements. Total sales to
day, 80,900 share?.
Bonds were irregular in sympathy with
stocks. Total salei. par value, S2.07O.0fl0.
United States bonds were ail unchanged
on the last call.
