THE SCRANTON TRIBUNES WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 190
CI

WHO PAYS THE
COUNTY TAXES
CORPORATIONS contribute
GOODLY SHARE.
Ono Third of the Whole Amount
Comes from the Assessment
Against the Real Estate of Corpor
ations and Limited Partnerships.
As Compared by Political Divisions
Seven-Tenths of tho Taxes Are
Paid by Sorauton Country Munic
ipalities, Pay Little.
A rnft of Interesting Information Is
contained In an analysis of Lacka
wanna, county's tax collections ns com
piled by John I Williams, the expert
accountant of the county commission
ers, for the annual report on this sub
ject made jto tho secretary of Internal
affairs.
Tho report is a tabular statement
showing how much each municipality
contributed In taxes for the mainten
ance of state, county, city, ward, bor
ough nnd township governments; tlie
amount collected for the support of the
poor, for tho construction and repair
nf streets, nnd bridges, and for school
purposes; the amount collected on per
sonal property and occupations, on tho
real estate of railroad corporations, and
on tho real estate of other corporations.
A summary of tho report follows:
Poor taxes 12MI6 42
For streets and bridges 101,390 7G
l-'or school purposes (not In
cluding state appropriation)... 4S,3SG IK!
Vor other purposes 471,010 12
Total U.1SS.2H23
Taxes on personal property U7,9."S 41
Taxes on occupations SG.SOD 41
Taxes on real estate of rail
roads 72,019 CG
Tuxes on real estato ot other
corporations and limited part-
norslilps 233,351 77
a They Are Not All.
These figures do not represent the to
tal expenditures for government pur
poses, as they do not include the state
appropriation for schools, the munici
palities' share of tho revenues from
liquor licenses, and the direct assess
jnents on abutting property holders for
paves, sewers and tlte like.
Ot the total amount of taxes paid, the
city of Seranton contributes $710,C9o.G6.
Carbondale contributes S73.S09.5C. All
the other municipalities in the county,
combined, contribute only $404,009.01.
Tho corporations pay on their real
estate, one-third of the whole amount
collected, or $303,377.33. Tho railroad
companies alone pay as much tax on
their real estate as the City of Carbon
dale pays for all purposes on real es
tate, occupations and personally.
The county evidently has four mun
icipalities in which all the inhabitants
ore rich, or at an events, contain no
ri.iupeis. These are Elmliurst, Goulds
bnro, CilMiburn and Lehigh. In none
oi these places was there any poor tax
assessed.
Helps from State.

Qunn Sectional Bookcases
Are the Acme of Expansiona'l Simplicity and Efficiency.
Tho only sectional bookcase made at tho American homo of good furnllu.ro, Grand Rapids
P-MM"I
The universal popularity of tho Gunn Sectional Bookcase has a foundation upon Its multiplied advan
tages over all other bookcases, built In sections. This statement Is not based on adjectlvos, but points of
reat superior merit, some of which arc here Illustrated. Wc aro sold agents In Northeastern Pennsylva
nia for the Gunn sectional Bookcase and a corner of our main floor Is devoted to a practical demon
stration of their peerless usefulness. Illustrated literature, mailed free, upon request. But better than
that Is a personal Inspection.
This illustration shows a
Gunn Sectional Bookcase of
two book sections, with top
and base sections.
An important feature of the
"Gunn" is that whether one
or a dozen sections are used,
its elegance of proportion is
never lost.
For expansion in height, it is only necessary to
add book sections, the same top and, base sections
being used.

As a Gunn Sectional Bookcase
overcomes all these disadvantages
and costs no more than the cumber

to buy any but a "Gunn?"
This sectional view shows the roller bearings and re
movable door an exclusive feature of the Gunn Sec
tional Bookcase. The advantages are apparent at a
glance. Doors cannot bind they are operated with a
single knob leaving one hand free to handle book's For
washing purposes or the replacing of a broken glass the
removal of the door Is but the work of an tnstanf. No
other bookcase approaches the "Gunn" In point af prac
tical utility.

Here Is pictured the
perfect adaptability of
the Gunn Sectional flpFjra-g.iai

treatment, either In
office or home. The
polished surface of' the

every purpose of a
mantel, tor the display
of pictures and brlc-a-brac.
Its application around one window Is even more beautifully ef
fective, as Is Its use In corners.
The Gunn Bookcase grows with your library to
which there Is no limit. An additional section may be
purchased at a slight cost as requirements dictate.

Here we call your attention to
the handsome smooth end appear
ance and that the edges of the
shelves do not portrude in the Gunn
Sectional Bookcase. The sections
are so nicely joined that the sectional
feature is hardly noticeable.
You will also notice the ease of
operating door with one hand free
also removing door.
Lower drawer sec tions are fur
nished when desired.
No other sectional bookcase with heavy
bands on sides and protruding shelves can
compare in any respect with the "Gunn."
Yet the "Gunn" case costsno more.

THE MARKETS.
Wall Street "Review.
New York. Doc. 2,-The notable early
strength in today's stock market was .ip
narcntly due to a resumption of actilt
on tlio part ot some of the recently pass

Tho acUaneo halted about the timo tho
delivery ot tho message to congress was
due. Tho market lacked all power of ic
nlstanco to tho selling movement uom
that timo forward and tho selling- pressure
gained in force until near the close, which
was dull nnd heavy. The check to tlt.
recent upward course of tho speculation
in tho local tractions had a deprei-slns ef
fect on the general market. The de
cline in tractions was dun partly to a
natural desire to tako profits hut also in
part to tho announcement that a judicial
decision on tho special franchise tax was
impending. Total sales. 713.M0 shares.
