street parade and on the minstrel plat
form, will bo a novel attraction that will
bo well received in Honesdale.
A largely attended dance was enjoy
ed in tho Opera bouse. Friday evening,

Tho wet weather during the past sea
son lias seriously injured tho grain
crop of many farmers In this vicinity.
In the early season It was tho corn
that suffered. Very many Holds were
not harvested, being left as worthless.
Tho frequent recent rain storms have
destroyed much of the buckwheat,
which could not be threshed and had
grown and become rotten. The acreage,
was largo, but the pan-cake supply
will be cut short in Wayne county at
least.
Dr. W. T. Butler has returned from n
woek',s vacation, spent in Philadelphia.
During his absence his dental parlors
have been repainted.
Honesdale Is nearly prepared for the
free delivery mail service. Several are
having the private lock mall boxes
placed on their residence.

At the Lyceum last night "In Old Ken
tucky" was presented by a good company,
with a lino scenic display.

That "Tho Span of Life," Sutton Vane's
realistic melodrama lias lost 110110 of Its
popularity was demonstrated by tho
largo audience which greeted It last
evening at tho Academy. Tho play luls

hero last evening Is tho best which has
over presented tho production here. Miss
Francis and Miss Hurley In tho leading
and comedy roles deserve particular men
tion. Tho play Is In four acts and eleven
scenes nnd has an elaborate scenic equip
ment. Tho third act Introduces the famous
acrobats, "Tho Douazottas," who form a
human bridge twelve feet long nnd thirty
loot in tho air over which three people
run to safety. Tho Lighthouse scono U
the second act Is very realistic. "Tho
Span of Life" will be repeated tonight
and Wednesduy with matinees both days.

"Phroso" nt the Dixie.
The audiences at the Dixie theater yes
terday were certainly mystllled in 11 thor
ough manner by the strange performance
of tho mueh-talked-of Phroso, the me
chanical man. Although all regarded the
tiling with tho most careful scrutiny, but
few worn really satisfied whether It was
flesh and blood or wood, who and wax.
While It seemed almost Impossible that a
figure could be constructed that would
walk and talk, yet It also appeared Im
possible that a human being could pro-t-erve
tho immobility of expression that
made tho wax-like face of Phroso Impene
trable. An excellent vaudeville bill Is also given,
in which tho Clnyton White and Marie
Stuart company, Johnson, Davenport and
Lorclla, the Knight Brothers, Young and
Brooks. Mi.Olynu, tho bicyclist, and Miss
Kmile Kdwards won much applause. The
White and Stuart company will present
an entirely new sketch on Thursday, Fri
day and Saturday, entitled, "Geraldlao."
At the evening performance, Sid Forester,
of Forester it Floyd, made his appear
ance and gave several songs, which were
well received.
"The Cowboy nnd the Lady."
There Is no li;ck of "atmosphere" in
"Tho Cowboy and tho Lady," by Clyde
Fitch, which will bo the attraction at tho
Lyceum Wednesday night. Jt is redolent
of the breezy west and it Is worthy of
general favor.
The position, hrlelly. is this: A Yale
man coines to Colorado to grow tip with
tho country. Ho is at at tho head of 11
busy enterprise lie meets a classmate
hero, a dawdling fellow who is n chaser
of petticoats and a bold, bad, superheated
man generally. Tho rascal has for a
wife a very sweet and coquettish wo
man, whom the hero, North, falls des
perately hi lovu with. She, while not ad
mitting It. Is in lovo with him. which
from a highly moral standpoint, is rep
rehensible. It Is human nature, never
theless. A half-bleed whom Weston has injured
by making lovo to his sweetheart, kills
Weston in the dance hall and leaves tho
body with tho moonlight streaming in
upon it. As the real murderer glides
away Mrs. Weston and North enter tho
darkened room from dlffeient points,
both unconscious of tho horror they nro
to meet. They are stopped by the corp.su
of tho nmidcrcd man. They glanco at
each other and each thinks tin other Is
the murderer. Sullenly, tho alarm Is
given, tho rononi Wis up. the lights arc
turned on and, the sheriff being of tho
party, sees the wife bending over tho
depraved husband and, assuming she is
tho murderer, starts to arrest her. Then
North steps up and, to save her, .says:
"I am tho man you want," and gives him
self up. Mrs. Weston Is horror-struck
and silent, assuming of course, tlmt
North's confession Is the simple truth.
Tills, It will be seen, is a particularly
strong situation, worthy almost of tho
genius of Sardou. The denouement Is
cleverly worked out in tho last act.
Mr. Kent In tho title rolo is said to bo
admirably lilted. An exceptionally ca
pable company Is promised, while tho
stage settings nro snld to bo particularly
elaborate.

Tho company presenting "King Dodo"
will consist of twenty principals, thirty
chorus and an orchQstra of ten picked
musicians. No company In years has had
such a thorough equipment and nothing
