'Newell Dwlght Hillls, of Plymouth Church, Brooklyn, N. Y. There Was an Interestlr" Show Followed In the Afternoon by a' Horse Race. From a Staff Correspondent. ' Blnghamton, N. Y.. Sept. SO.-The twelfth annual exhibition of the Blng hamton Industrial Exposition began here today at Stow park. There were more than 8,000 persons prcsent.vvhlch . beats all the recoids for an opening Jv. There were many attractions to draw this big crowd out to the beautiful exposition grounds. The usual custom at exhibits of this soit Is to spend the first day In prcpaiatlon for those to co'me and have nothing but confusion and turmoil to greet those who ven ture out to see the sights. In depart ing from this custom and having everything In readiness for those who pay admittance to sec a fair on the first day, Blnghamton should be con gratulated that the management of her "Big Fair" is in extremely cap able hands and that each special fea ture Is scheduled for a coitaln time and comes off on the second. Among the attractions this afternoon was a speech by the eminent pulpit or ator. Rev. Newell Dwlght Hillls, of Brooklyn, N. Y the successor of Rev. Lyman Abbott and Hemy Ward Beech er, of Plymouth chuich. He chose for his theme "Social Happiness and the Redemption of Mankind from Drudg ry Through Tools and Machinery An Exposltional Address." Dr. Hlllis was Introduced by Rev. Dr. Waters, pas tor of the First Congregational church of Blnghamton. Ml. Hillls' address was mainly devoted to tt. icing the wonderful ptogiess of mankind fiom the earliest to the present generation. SCHOOL. CHIL.Dr.-N. 'A large number of the public school thlldren of Blnghamton weie among his audience and he addressed tflmself In a large measure to their sens rot un derstanding, telling in simple phrases the origin of many useful inventions and discoveries, such as Galileo's adap tation of the telescope fiom observing vthe lenses in the eve of ml ox; how I Eli Whitney dlscoveied the feasibility of the cotton gin from Latching a cat's C method of plucking the feathers of a goose, and other incidents capable of r being digested by. a child's intellect. V"" He impressed them with their good u fortune in living in this gicat age, and compared it with the hardships of the time we are apt to refer to as "the good old davs." He told his young hearers of the history of science and the function of weajth. He congratu lated them all on the fact that they lived "in such a happy age and in the greatest nation, the wisest nation and the happiest nation that the world has ever seen. Dr. Hillls was escoited to the park by the Sixth battery, Light Artillery. New York Volunteers, and after he had finished his speech the battery gave a Balute of five guns, the heavy booming making every Individual horse on the grounds dance on his hind legs. All the schools closed at noon today, and a large number of the pupils were admitted to the grounds at reduced prices. Two sections of the, grandstand were occupied by children from St. Mary's Orphan asylum and the Sus quehanna Valley home. These voung eters had the time of their life, and their glimpse Into the big world be hind their sheltering homes will un doubtedly be a tieasuied memory for many a month to come. VAUDEVILLE ACTS. On a high platfoim opposite the grandstand fifteen different vaudeville acts were given duiing the afternoon, the programme lasting from 1.30 until 5 o'clock, and Including aciobats, jug glers, equilibrists, trick and fancy bi cycle riders, the bicycle whirl, slack wire perfoimeis, funmakers, etc. A baby show was given at 2.30, for which theie weie twenty contestants, two of them being plckanlnles. Two horse owneis got Into a hot ar gument about the meiits of their re Bpective steeds during the afternoon, and after consldeiable "hot air" de cided to settle the question then and there. So a match nice for $100 a side was gotten up, best two In tluee, and the course cleared. It was a great race. Each hoise broke about eeiy forty rods, nnd the opposing rtilver slowed his nag until the fit was over, and then the race was resumed to the next standstill. Two heats were tiot ted and each got tho glory of one heat by a nobc, when Divan, Jr., became nick, and the match was declaied off. Joseph AV. Piatt received a telegram on Monday afternoon, summoning him to tho bedside of his son, who is ill with typhoid 3TRANQER THAN FICTION, A Remedy Which Has Revolutionized the Treatment of Stomach Troubles. The remedy Is not heralded as. a won derful discovery nor yet a secret patent medicine, neither Is It claimed to cure anything except dyspepsia, Indigestion nnd stomach troubles with which nine out of ten suffer. The remedy Is In the form of pleasant tasting tablets or lozenges, containing vegetable and fruit essences, pure asep tic pepsin (government test,) golden seal nnd diastase. The tnblets are sold by druggists under the name of Stuart's Dyspepsia Tnblets. Many Interesting experiments to test the digestive power of Stuart's tablets show that one ginln of the active principle contained In them Is sufficient to thoroughly digest 3000 grains of raw meat, eggs and other wholesome food, Stuart's Tablets do not act upon the bowels like after dinner pills and cheap cathartics, which simply Irritate and Inflame the Intestines without having any effect whatever In digesting food or curing Indigestion. If the stomach can be rested nnd as sisted In the work of digestion It will very soon recover Its normal vigor, ns no organ Is so much abused and over woiked as the stomach. This Is the secret, If there Is any sec ret, of the remarkable success of Stu art's Dyspepsia Tablets, a remedy practlcully unknown a few years ago and now the most widely known of any tteatment for stomach weakness. This success haf been secured entire ly upon Its merits as a digestive pure nnd simple because theie can be no stomach trouble If the food Is promptly digested. Stuarts Dyspepsia Tablets act cn tliely on the food eaten, digesting It completely, so that It can be assimilat ed Into blood, nerve and tissue. They cuie dyspepsia, water brash, sour stom ach, gas and bloating after meals be cause they furnish the digestive power which weak stomachs lack and unless that lack Is supplied It Is useless to at tempt to cure by the use of "tonics," "pills" and cathattlcs which have abso lutely no digestive power. Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets can be found at all drug stores and the regu lar use of one or two of them after meals, will demonstrate their meilt better than any other argument. fever at Winston, N. C.
