The council met In regular Reunion

been tho stumbling block of the council
for some time past, was finally dis
posed of by awarding the contract to
M. J. Gibbons, of Mcrnnton, whoHo bid
was 156,770.75. Borough Engineer Iloran,
In pursuance of Instructions from the
council, presented a new estimate of
tho probable amount of rock to bo en
countered In the work, which he stated
approximately to be 18,000 feet, as
ngalnst 48,000 feet estimated by ex
Uorough Engineer Knight. Based on
this latest estimate, which Is conceded
to be very low, the figures of the throe
lowest bidders were as follows: M. J.
Gibbons, $5G,770.7G: O'Boyle & Donahue,
$57,831.60; Hendler Construction com
pany, J56.175.75. These figures show
.that the, Hendler bid is $602 low, and
lor every foot of rock found over 18,000
feet It will be lower, at the rate of
IhJrty-two cents per foot.
Borough Treasurer Wahlers reported
thai he had received $447 from the
"Scranton Gas nnd Water company,
eelns their share of the expense of
sulldlng the Nay Aug bridge. The

irdcredl
Chief of Police Healy reported two
vsrrcsts during August. The street com

Was $328.60. Mr. McLaughlin intro

clthln the borough. The speed is lim
ited to four miles per hour and all cars
must be stopped at every street cross
ing. A fine of $1,000 to be imposed for
each violation. It was referred to com
mittee. P. J. Grady, of Drinker street, was
elected to the position of sewer inspec
tor, without 'opposition. Mr. Doudlcan
moved that the street commissioner
suspend work on the borough streets
until such time as he has removed all
stone now quarried from the Golden lot
on Blakely street.
Borough Attorney McDonald informed
council that the case of Martin Dolphin
ngalnst the borough for $1,000, for the
death of his child, caused, it Is claimed,
by falling into an unguarded ditch at
the corner of Webster avenue and
Brook street, is on the list for Septem
ber 15. The secretary was instructed
to prepare needed data to enable Mr.
McDonald to prepare the case.
A map of the "borough is to be pre
pared, to better enable the ward assess
ors to find properties. This expense is
to be borne jointly by the county com
missioners, school board and councils,
and it has been estimated that the ex
pense, all told, will be about $3,000.
jlorough Engineer Horan was instruct
ed to begin the survey necessary at
once and prepare the map as soon as
possible.
Unless some unforseen injunction or
other hindrance should delay the work,
It is expected that work on the sewer
