A very mysteiious affair was wit
nessed on Main sticet, Dm yea, at un
early hour Sunday morning, and
whether or not a. ciline has been com
mitted and toveied up is a question
that may neer be solved. One of tho
Misses Benedict, who lesldcs in the
old Benedict homestead a. short dis
tance below Stephenson street, heaid
voices In fiont of the house and aiose
to Investigate. Looking out of the win
dow she observed a half dozen men In
the roadway In front of tho house. Be
tween them, lying on tho stieet, was
the body of a man which seemed to
have his aims and legs bound. One of
the men was heaid to lemaik that
he had no idea he struck the man such
a heavy blow. In u few minutes tho
men picked up the body and carried It
off, dlsappeailng aiound the corner of
a saloon leading in the dliection of
the river. Tho next morning it was
discovered that the Benedict's rope
clothes line had been stolen, Nothing
has been heaid of the affair since.
Miss Benedict did not lecognle any or
the men she saw.
A heavy lightning and thunder
storm, accompanied by a downpour of

place this afternoon. It rained just
