THE MARKETS
Wall Street Review.
New York. Aug. 12. The dominating
fin-tors in tho stock market contlnuo to
1)0 the coming crops and tho money out
look Crop news was eminently satisfac
tory today, both that of the monthly re
liort of the agricultural department anil
the later news of the weather bureau but
it is to be born in mind that the specula
tion for home time past has been dill-Ki-'iitly
discounting good crops, which
li.ivo been clearly foreshadowed. On tho
other hand, the autumn uctlvity in tho
money market while it has been expected
and made tho subject of industrious
warnings has been Ignored in speculation.
This week's rise in money rates, there
fore, would naturally ho of most effect on
speculative conditions. There was con
Bldeiable strength at one time today and
In u, few cases it continued to tho close,
but for the most part the early liho in
prices was taken advantage of to realize
lirotlts and the general level of prices
ended lower than last night. There was
a further contraction also In tho volume
of dealings which dropped back again be
low halt a million shares. Unofficial es
timates on today's government reports
indicate a wheat harvest of over 632,000,
(HX) bushels. This is nearly a hundred
million bushels below tho crop of last
year hut has never been exceeded except
by that crop and tho one of 1S98. As
for the corn crop, today's government
ligurcs indicate tho yield the largest in
tho history of the country. This had its
effect amongst the southwestern grang
ers, especially amongst tho Gould group.
Another striking show of strength was
mado by Baltimore and Ohio. Amongst
tho returns of railroad gross earnings for
tho first week of August Chesapeake and
Ohio Bhows a dccicaso of $103,533, com
pared with last year and Missouri Pa
illlc's earnings for tho tamo period de-i-llned
SiS.OOO. The two groups of rail
roads of which tho strongest stocks are
were thus handicapped by this unfavor
able Influence. Total sales today, 4r.',r00
hharcs. Tho bond market was dull and
tho Central of Georgia incomes were
weak. Total sales, par value, $l,3S0,0OO.
United States bonds were all un
changed on tho lust call.
