PIttston, July 31. William L. Gee,
ono of the pioneer residents of this
vicinity, passed away Inst night at 10.30
o'clock at his homo on Luzerno avenue,
West PIttston, where ho .had resided
for the past forty years. Mr. Geo was
aged 76 years and 13 days, and his
death resulted from a complication of
diseases which commenced on July 17,
his birthday. Deceased was a native of
Manchestershlre, England, and came
to this country when a very young man.
Fifty years ago he was united in mar
riage to Miss Olive Stuart, of Honcs
dalo, who survives with an adopted
child, Mrs. Mary Alllnson. At tho out
break of tho Civil war, Mr. Geo en
listed In Battery M, Pennsylvania In
fantry, and served three years, return
ing homo as a second lieutenant. Do
ceased was a member of Gohonto lodge
of Odd Fellows, St. John's lodge of Free
and Accepted Masons, nnd was a char
ter member of tho West PIttston Pres
byterian church. The funeral will take
place Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock,
with interment in the West PIttston
cemetery.
Stephen Tennant, a Jenkins township
constable, went to tho Boston settle
ment a few miles cast of here, last
evening, with a warrant for the arrest
of ono John Berantlne, an Italian.
When the officer reached the home of
Berantlne, the man was not to bo
found, but the officer had misgivings
that he was somewhere in tho locality
and he loitered around, expecting to ar
rest him later. A short tlmo afterward
he approached tho house again, and as
he did so Berantlne came out with a
shotgun and fired at him. The con
stable was quite a distance off at tho
time and this Is the sole reason he lives
today to tell the story. The shot In the
charge of the gun scattered consider
able, but Tennant's clothes were torn
In several places by tho bullets, al
though he was uninjured. Another
warrant was secured for Berantlne's
arrest, but he has fled.
B. J. Burns, the undertaker, while
returning homo from Browntown last
night, after laying out a corpse, was
held up by five thugs. As he was pass
ing under the Erie railroad bridge on
Railroad street, within fifty yards of
Main street, one of tho highwaymen
seized the horse's bridle, while another
demanded Burns' money. Burns was
not to be easily taken, however, and he
struck the man .near the carriage a
blow In tho stomach with the butt end
of his whip and then, lashing up tho
team, knocked over the man at tho
horse's head and escaped. City police
officers hurried to the scene and gave
chase to men found nearby, but they
escaped.
A ' silver plating concern wishes to
locate in this vicinity, and a represen
tative was here yesterday and was
shown nbou: the town by members of
the board uf trade.
The funeral of T. H. Davis' young
child took place this afternoon with
interment in PIttston cemetery. Ser
vices were conducted at. tho homo of
Dr. Parke, assisted by Rev. David" Mac
Donald, of Avoca. A quartette compos
ed of Miss Moo Staler, Miss Lulu Ked
die, Thomas Kneebone and Edgar Pro
byn. A Polander had a narrow escape from
drowning in the river here this morn
ing. He was coming down in a boat
but the curient was strong and ho was
carried against one of the piers of
Ferry bridge. The boat balanced on
the point of tho pier and the occupant
was rebcued with tho aid of a lope let
down from the pier.
A Hughestown cow, owned by David
Davis, got Into Peter Schmaltz's lot
this morning and ate of the fruit of a
wild cherry tree, and died shortly after
ward. Martin Dolan, pitcher for the West
PIttston base ball team has accepted a
position with the Allentown team and
left for that city yesterday.
Richard Appley, mine foreman for
the Erie company at No, 11 colliery has
accepted' a position with the San Fran
cisco Coal Mining company in Mexico.
