adam pavement on the West Side, Is
exhibiting a "white wings street sweep
er," a hand device which operates like
a carpet sweeper, and worked by ono
man. An effort will bo made to have
the West Pittston council purchase a
half dozen of them.
On and' after next Sunday all tho
confectionery nnd ice cream stores In
rtlc city will be closed. An order to
that effect has been given by Mayor
Corcoran at tiio request of the Clerics'
association. The confectioners aro
,very much displeased over the order

cigars and candy.
Another hitch 1ms been met with by
tlie Pittston Opera House company.
The company recently asked the city to
exchange four feet of ground with them,
both Having adjoining lots on the Trox
ell plots, and an ordinance providing
for the transfer was Introduced in and
adopted In select council, but met with
opposition In the common branch. The
.difficulty was finally overcome by sub
stituting a concurrent resolution, which
passes on a majority vote of the mem
bers' at a meeting, In place of the or
dinance and tho resolution wus passed
by both councils. The mayor, however,
refused to Mgn and asked tho city so
licitor for an opinion as to whether or
not the transfer could legally be made
by resolution. The solicitor's opinion
was negative and tho mayor will veto
the resolution,
