Renominated for Congressman Yesterday by the
Dtiblicans of Lackawanna Countv.
position, hut In Judge Vosburg's case
his gieat personal popularity resulted
in his receiving the compliment of a
vote that was quite as large as that of
any set of opposing candidates.
Congressman Connell carried cveryt
reported district excepting sixteen and
in these the margin by which his oppon
ent won out was in every instance
small. In the mining districts where
the Farr adherents looked for strong
support for the "Workingman's Friend"
they were sorely disappointed. Mr. Con
nell maintained his two to one lead
umong the striking miners with the
same regularity that ho did in other
districts.
On the South Side, where Mr. Connell
is always strong, he was phenomenally
strong yesterday. His opponent did not
count on making much of a showing
on the South Side and reckoned
well.
The Fourth, Fifth, Fourteenth, Fif
teenth and Twenty-first wards, com
prising what is generally regarded as
Hyde Park, gave Connell 1,661 and
Farr 3 ,350. Mr. Connell carried the
Fifth ward by a two to one vote.
In the central city Mr. Connell's vote
was in some districts a close approach
to that of the South Side, and in Green
Ridge he beat Farr more than five to
one.
In Carbondale Connell got 910 votes
to Farr's 2S3. Jermyn gave Connell
1S1 and Farr 62. Mayflold gave Connell
111 and Farr 54. Olyphant, more than
all the others a distinctive strike com
munity, gave Connell 1S8 to 98 for Farr.
Taylor's six wards gave Connell a ma
jority of 143.
The vote for the other officers was
comparatively close between the sec
ond and third man in each Instance, but
the leads were sufficiently apparent at
11 o'clock to disclose to a surety who
the winners were.
The day was ideal for electioneering
and a big vote came out. The voting
was particularly heavy in the mining
districts where so many men are idle.
It was feared that the farming districts
would make a poor showing because of
the farmers being rushed with their
haying, but this did not prove to be
the case.
No unpleasant incidents were report
ed from any part of the county.
The return judges will meet Friday
morning at 10 o'clock to complete the
vote. They will meet In the Central
Republican club rooms on Washington
avenue.
