We hive li.vl no serious trouble during (lie year

October, 1900, (wltcu the men throughout tha

Increase) but what wr time bad nome petty dis
turbances to contend with, owing, largely, to the
unfortunate manner In which the strike wsa (ti
tled. It alio resulted In making the Uvea ot the
loses, foremen and superintendents far from
pleasant, owing to the ineotcnt attitude avnimed
by aorne of the boys and more ignorant mine
workers. Hero arc somo of thcac petty strikes at
one colliery:
rirst The union ordered the drivers to atop
tho cars to one man, because be was not a mem
ber of tho United Mine Workers of America. This
boycott was finally railed, and the man was
forced by the men to Join the union.
fiecond The breaor boyi clewed down the nilnrs
one day bcciuao the foreman would not Inform
them, on demand, what tlnm Ii was going to
allow them fo'r the fifteen minutes the bieaker
Flopped in the forenoon, on aitount of the chutes
being blocked.
Third In January, the runners and drivers
went on strike, became the paymaster would not
pay them every cth;r Saturday, Instead "1 semi
monthly, 1'ourth On Atignt lt, the raid Insertion
committee sent home foity miners and fifty la
borers because they did not have their union
i. mis with them that day. This was done by
the committee vMtlng the men in their working
places, and hofoir- tho foreman in charge was
anaie of their netloii.
Fifth A miner vas iioticc-tl riding on a street
car in September, while tlw stiret car employes
vcic on strike, lie was called a 'scab," the
thitcrs refined to deliver cafe to him, and It re
sulted in n lot of trouble for all concerned.
April Jlth, 1901, the dricr bota en the culm
dump went on strike because one of their mem
bers was discharged fur disobeying orders.
On May 11th, the bn.is quit work for one day
on account of circus In town.
On Hay lGth, the bieaker boys went out ag-iln.
When asked why, they gaie no reasons, but the
inference was that their action was instigated by
Home of tho oldtr bojt. and men working inside,
who were in waul of a holiuiy.
Mine Was Idle.
The mine was idle on April 1st, in compliance
sith the following notice, posted in conspicuous
ldae.es:
NOTICE.
"Members of the Ii0c.il: In accordance with
the request of our national president, it was re
sohed that we obrene Monday, 1st day of April,
3001, as .i holldaj. All members will rlease
aMdo by the eame.
"(Signed By Order of liOcal."
We also had considerable trouble on account
of certain of the miners not being willing to
Join the union, and the rimers refusing to give
them rare. The result was, they were eventually
forced into Joining.
On June 7th. the minns in one of the veins
ti nek for an increase, in price on the car. As it
was the eame price that was being paid in the
nmc trin at. adjoining collieries, and was found,
upon imesticration, to be eminently fair, no ac
tion was taken, and the men finally leturned to
work.
In January, when one company decided to
check in and out all men emploieel by the com
pany, objections were raised hy the local. They
were told that they would either have to do th's
or the mine would be closed down, indefinitely,
nnd they finally decided to obey tho rule.
On May Csth, there was trouble at one mine,
on account r-f ilrncrs leiusing to gie care
tn a non union nun, who bad taken the place of
h union man. Work was suspended at this col
liery for about slxl.v days.
In May, it was arranged to woik some, of the
collieries nine and ten hours. Tl.c runneis and
driiera at u crrlain mine objected to this, and
declined to work more than eight hours, and the
lalmiors ionised to lo.nl mor than eight hours'
coal. The leaders in his nuncmont were dis
cliaiged, and the following notice was posted by
the union:
"XOTIPK.
"All members of the above-named local are
hereby notified that at a meeting held on the
nbovc date it was unanimously rariied that all
employes should work the munber of bonis re
rpilicd of them until otherwise ordered by said
local.
"(hlened) By Instruction of Loral."
During the minnicr there were frequent re
quests to close down the mines tor United Mine
Workers' picnics, etc.
The men at a mine refused to work one day on
account of a United Mine Workers' pictnic. They
made' no request to liae an idle day, but it was
ordered by the local. Fioni eciui cama-.s mado
tho following day, it was found that only fif
teen per rent, of the rmplnics of that mine at
rinded the picnic, but they i-lalcd that they had
their orders from the district boaul,
Would Not Work.
At another mine, when the company wis hlwrt
of driver bo3'., for a few days, we were coin
pellrd to utllbo company men as drivers. One
of he men, receiving 25e per hour, refused to
rirlic, and he was discharged. The other com
tuny men who nut drlvim; quit work in B)m.
pithy. The foreman requested scleral miners
and laborers to go out and drive,, in order to
keep tho mine running. This they refused to do,
naylng they would not "scab." The men
binuglit this up before their loci!, who refused
to sustain them in their action.
There has been considerable trouble on account
of not allowing the union to examine cards at
tho head of shafts, but nothing serious. Also no
rud of double on account of some employe re
fusing to join tho union, and the attempts of
tho union to force them into their oigaiiUalion.
To gio ,ou on Idea of the methods adopted
ti.v the organization, I quote the following rcso.
lotion, which was adopted nt a nuss meeting in
N.intlcnUe, February Cth, 1902:
"Ihat we postpone ilcllulto action until the
ltd, 4th and 6th days of March, when the next
showing of cards lakes place, and on the morn
ing of thu Stli diy of March, 1002, all employes
who haic not the union working card in sight
will bo classed us non-union rmplojcs, and we
will then and there refuse- to riesrcnil the mines
or work with such emplojcs until they become
members' of our organization.
"(Rlgneil)lBy tho President and Secretary,"
This notice was published In tho newspapers,
iind was intended to cover six local uniom in the

natural recovery from yesterday'i weakness. Ibe
Influence which weakened tho market then were,

Yesterday's sharp relapses In some slocks

PROCLAflATION
That the t
season,
TI,at thi3 is the most comfortable store in town that it is
the largest, best ventilated and healthiest that it has more
summer comforts and can make you more comfortable at
Home,
That its stocks are fresh and
fair.
That shopping early is wise early in the season and early
in the day because it avoids the crowds and the heat. It
keeps you and us in better temper and gives you more leisure
to examine things. It gives you first pick. It helps our
salespeople, aud consequently gives you better service.
'uat to make summer more bearable in everyway is our
one thought uow, To take the strain off man and beast.
To help you get ready early, or if you must wait until later
to make summer shopping as comfortable as possible for
you theu.
nat tus store serves ail classes, both the rich and the
poor, aud that it serves each better because it serves them
both.
That the Connolly & Wallace store is a place for your
convenience, aud whether you wish to buy, or look, or visit,
or rest, you are always welcome.
