THE MARKETS
Wall Street Review.
New York, May 5.-The disturbance nrl anxi
ety which were felt In the financial world this
morning were, much relieved before the closa of
tba day on the stock exchange. It was known
before Ihc slock market opened that tho hopes
entertained on Saturday of securing mearn to
tide over the firms threatened with embarrass
ment had failed and there was nothing to to
for lhc houses but to announce their Inability
to meet their contracts. In two cases tho failures
were fully expected, tint tho third came ai ; fome
nting of a surprle. There was heavy liquidation
on tho stock cxehanuo when they wero an
nounced, but the effective support offered the
general market checked the Indiscriminate linulu
allon ami Induced more sober reflections. There
is no doubt there was comlderable illttrurt felt
of tho fabric of credits generally, owing to Ig
norance of the extent to which tho collapse ot
the Webb-Meyer stocks bad Involved others. Tho
development In those stocks in themselves was
recognised to bo not of first Importance. , The
collapse of their prices naturally reduced the
basli of credits which had been acquired on the
fictitious and manipulative valuation, but It did
not appear that the local money market had been
their credits. Neither had the dazzling rise in
the prices for these fccurlties attracted any
great speculative following. The trouble was
thus localized within a comparatively unall circle
of Immediate participants In the speculation.
This was soon demonstrated by tho movement of
the general market and the absence of financial
trouble In other quarters. There was the fear
that the Bame results must be faced of s m Iar
operations ol other pools In various specialties
and even of manipulative advances in standard
railroad stocks; but the readiness with which
offerings were absorbed quieted the nervous ex
citement and Induced some buying back of
stocks by hasty sellers. In fact the day' net
looses are lounci 10 ne quite iikikiiiu--ui,i. -
rule and not a few important stocks closed high
er than Saturday. The reports of copious rains
in the southwest and the effective breaking of the
drought conditions which have kept awake "wW
ely regarding the crops was a matciial aid to the
recovery. The persistent upward course of Louis
ille and Nashville was a sustaining influence.
Rumora were renewed of a combination of this
road with the Cldcago. Indianapolis and Louis
ville. The movement for the advance was not
followed up, howeer, with any degree of vigor.
The prospect of a strike on the 'part of the an
thracite miners and the Btringcnt condition of
the money market would amply account for n
leprcssion of speculation. As .a nutter of fact,
the active liquidation of the first hour accounted
for ncarlv one-half of the day's total dealings.
Monev loaned as high as 20 per cent, and re
ceded to 6 per cent, only after the principal
demand had been made. Total sales today, 7U1,
200 shares. , ,
Some of the speculative bords were weak under
forced liquidation, but the market lecovorcd and
became irregular. Total tales, par value, ?l.OJ0,
000. United State? bond3 wcio all unchanged on
the last call.

Scranton took "Williamsport Into camp
'csterduy, by the store ot 14 to 5. Mc
Surry did the twirling for Scrnnton,
and up to the eiplith limine; he pitched
good ball. It was during this Inning
that Scranton went up In the air. They
quickly came down, but not until four
of the Williamsport men had crossed
the plate.
Scranton started out In the first Inning
with one run, and Williamsport did like
wise. Williamsport didn't get another
run until tho eighth, but Scranton con
tinued to pile up tho score. Then Bell
went In tho -box, and Scranton didn't
get any more runs during the game.
Blakey put up a great game, both In
the field and ut-tlte bat. He hud one
two-bagger and two three-baggers to
his credit. Stroh's fielding was superb,
nnd in the sixth Inning he especially
distinguished himself.
A hot one came toward him, and It
was a little too high to catch easily, so
he sprang In the ulr and made a beauti
ful one-hand catch of what would, In
nil probability, have been a two-base
hit.
Schmaltz also made a pretty catch of
a low ball, at the .same time making n
double play. In fact, the game abound
ed In sentatlotuil stops and catches.
