FACTS ABOUT SOUTHWESTERN
COAL FIELD.
There Ate Seven Coal Dedi in the
Indian Territory Thick Enough to
Be Commercially Workable Mine
Workers from This Region Are to
Attend the Conference to Be Held

The southwestern coal field Includes
tlio three districts of, Indian Territory,
Arkansas urnl North Texas. It Is dis
cussed by Mr. Joseph A. Tall In Part
III of tho Twenty-second Annual Kc
liort of the United States Geological
Survey, now In press.
The Indian Territory coul field Is di
rectly connected with the Kansas coal
Held on the north and the Arkansas
field on tho"east. The northern part
and the extreme western part are un
developed and little known. The field
Includes a small part of Kastern Okla
homa, the western half of the Chero
kee, the whole of the Creek, the north
eastern corner of the Chickasaw and
the northern third of the Choctaw Na
tions, and has an area of approximately
110.000 square miles.
There are seven beds of coal In the
Indian Territory coal field thick enough
to be commercially workable, besides
others which may be locally of work
able thickness.
The Arkansas coal Held runs In the
bnsln of the Arkansas river, seventy
live miles eastward from the state line,
narrowing- from fifty to twenty-five
miles between the southern foothills of
Ihe Hnston Mountains and the north
ern ridpes of the Ouachita Mountains.
The Noith Texas field extends from
the south of the Colorado Wver volley,
between Lampasas and Concho coun
ties, northward to Red Itiver, In Mon
tague county. It Is nearly 250 miles
in length, with an average width of
about forty-live miles, and has, there
fore, an npptoximatc nrea of 10,000
Miliar miles.
In 1P0O the southwestern field pro
duced 3,900,273 tons, valued at $5,424,-r,.-.8.
Omitting the North Texas product,
r.M.030 tons, as not reported fully, of
the 3,370,243 tons produced by the Indian
Territory and Arkansas, 43 per cent
vvns used for railroad fuel, 23 per cent
for manufacturing fuel, 32 per cent for
domestic, fuel, and 56,953 tons of the
Indian Territory were made into coke.
Sixty-seven commercial mines in twelve
counties produced 3,906,273 tons In 1900,
and the estimated capacity of sixty
one of these mines (six Texas mines
being omitted) was 4,9993,614 tons.
In 18S0 Arkansas produced 14,778 tons;
In 1S00 Indian Territory and Arkansas
produced 1,279,117 tons; in 1900 the In
dian Territory produced 1,922,298 tons;
Arkansas, 1,447,945 tons, and Texas,
D36.030 tons, a total of 3,906,273 tons.
Shipments of this coal to market are
entirely by rail, and the development
has depended directly upon railroad
building. Four roads reach the Indian
Territory field the Missouri, Kansas &
Texas, the St. Louis & San Francisco,
the Memphis & Choctaw, and the Kan
sas City Southern (extending to the
Gulf.) The last three named roads
supply the Arkansas field with trans
portation. The North Texas field is in
tersected by six roads, five of which
transport coal the Gulf, Colorado &
Santa Fe, the Texas & Pacific, the
Weatherford, Mineral Wells & North
western, the Chicago, Rock Island and
Texas, and the Fort Worth & Denver
City roads.
A Per Diem Basis.
,T. W. Midgley has submitted a pro
position to the American Railway asso
ciation for the formation of an asso
ciation for the purpose of Inaugurating
and maintaining a per diem basis for
tho use of freight cars. The method to
bo put Into effect July 1, and It is
thought if given a thorough trial for
one year the plan will show a saving
of over $200,000,000.
Mr. Mldgely recommends that all set
tlements for the use of freight cars be
on a per diem basis Instead of u mileage
rate and that the new association
should act through an executive
committee empowered to interpret
the rules, adjust differences, remove
misunderstandings and recommend
changes; that a clearing house should
be organized for the settlement of
monthly balances growing out of the
Interchange of freight ears between
members.
Should the putting into effect of this
proposition be the means of getting
more service and quicker despatch out
of the cars in transit. It will be a wel
come Innovation to the coal trade.
To Hold Conference Saturday.
John Mitchell, national president of
the United Mine Workers of America,
yesterday notified President T, D. Nich
ols, of District No. 1, United Mine
AVorkeru of America, that the joint con
ference of operators, mine workers'
committee nnd representatives of tho
Clvlo Federation will be hold In New
York next Saturday morning. The date
for the conference was decided upon at
a meeting held In Washington, Monday.
Tho conference on Saturday wilt prob
nbly be held In the headquarters of tho
Clvlo Federation. It will be attended by
tho presidents of tho conl-carrylng
roads, tho conciliation committee of tho
Clvlo Federation and a committee of
fifteen mine workers, Including National
President Mitchell nnd District Presi
dents Nichols, Duffy and Fnhey. The
local delegates to the conference will
leave Friday.
Wages Increased,
Soma time ago a request was made
by tho Delaware, Lackawanna and
Western moulders for an increase to
take effect May 1.
Yesterday the company announced a
ton cents per day Increase. Tho notice
gave much satisfaction to the workmen.

Charles E. Webster, late chief cngl
nccer of the Lehigh Valley railroad, has
been appointed principal assistant en
gineer of the New York Central and
Hudson River railroad, with headquar

York Central line comprising territory

Wall Street Beview.
New York, April 22. Today's stock market had
tho appearance of being tired, in the language of
the brokers. A gallant rally was made against
the depression and the sjmpathetic influence of
rather aggretilvc strength developed in some ot
tho eastern railroad stocks, had the clfccl of
checking the selling in the western field, so that
the losses, were nt one time prettty generally re
covered. But the action of Heading strongly in
dicated a culmination of the upward movement
in that stock and the taking of tueculatlvc
profit and afternoon rally in the wheat inaiket
reawakened the aniety felt for the winter wheat
crop. The western railroad btocku fell away to
tho lowest of the day, and the gains which had
been established elsewhere among important rail
road stocks melted away. .The market closed ac
tive and weak and generally at the lowest. A
violent break in Sugar to 122VS after selling up to
127?i was a contributing cause to the late weak
ness and was attributed to the growing apple
hension that the differential on sugar will be ic
moved or the Cuban reciprocity bill will fail.
Humors were revived of a consolidation of Amer
ican Cotton Oil and Virginia-Carolina Chemical.
The movements in International Power, Ameri
can Grass Twine, Wells Fargo, New York, New
Haven and Hartford, Long Island, the Keokuk
and Des .Moines stocks and others were unex
plained, 'flic early recovery in the market was
stimulated! by reports of showers in the winter
wheat belt, but the gain carrving roads showed
a nervous tone throughout and the real sustain
ing Influence in the market was the buying of
the Coalets, both hard and soft, and the Morgan
railroads. The evidence of realizing in Heading
lelt the market vulnerable again to the influence
of a rally in the wheat maiket, although that
was saiil to be partly due to the heavy decrease
during the week in the visible supply of wheat.

bonds were weak and the market generally was
