All day Friday the water kept rising rap idly and people owning property along the banks began to get uneasy and re move their personal property to places 1 of safety. About the middle of the afternoon a crash was heard and vast torrontH of water and heavy Ice came thundering down upon the town, caused . by the mill dam or C. Mathcwson giv ing away. This dam was about one hundred and fifteen feet long and near ly fifteen feet high. It hold a large body of water which made Lake Xoko mls, back of Keystone academy. The first bulldlnc that the flood and lee struck was a barn of George Reynolds, which It demolished. Next camp the property of the Keystone Lumber com pany, where it did several hundred dol lars' worth of damage by washing away lumber and flooding the machin ery, Including h dynamo. The barns of C. A. Urlggs and Chat lea Slsk were picked up from their foun dations and carried down stream. They struck the Iron bridge in the center of the town and were then de molished, the bridge resisting the force and remained upon Us foundation. The rear end of the large hotel barn was torn to pieces by Ihr Ice and other debris striking It. Many other small buildings were also washed awuy, with several flocks of blooded poultry. At 11 p. in., the largo stone dam of l?. S. Gardner & Hon, located one mile above town, could not withstand the tremendous pressure and gave away with a terrible crash, the Ice striking the handsome Iron bridge erected a. few years ago by the Lackawanna, com pany, and carried It down the stream for over a quarter of a mile. It also tore away one corner ot their large grist mill. The basi'.T.ent and eell'ir ot the general store of Charles Gardner was Hooded to the depth of several feet, doing much damage to the stock. Many other cellars throughout the town wore filled with water and mud. the water at one stage covering nearly half ot the town. Several of the streets are ruined and impassible. Most of the small bridges In the sur rounding country are washed away and cross country traffic is cut off. Many fish are scattered along the lowlands ..in pools of water, and are being picked up by residents, one party getting two carp out of one small pool that weighed fifteen nounds each. Sunday morning a heavy rain set in again nnd continued all day. About noon the streams again commenced to rapidly rise, and by night they were again over their banks and covering the lowlands, but so far no damage lias been reported from the last storm. Never in the history of the town lias it been visited by such a flood. FACTORYVILLE. Special to the Scraiilon Tribune. Faetoryville, March 3. The third of the series of lectures in the course at the Methodist Episcopal church will be leld Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. II. A. Gardner cele jrnled their nineteenth wedding anni versary last Friday afternoon and evening by entertaining a number of their friends at their commodious home on Main street. The event wns a most enjoyable one to all present, and It was, the wish of their friends that they might enjoy many more such events. Paulowna Itebekah lodge, No. ns, In dependent Order of Odd Fellows, will meet at their hall tomorrow night. 'Faetoryville borough council will meet next Wednesday night and after the business of last year is finished, they 'will reorganize for the coming year, three new members having been elected at the last election. The "old depot" hill on North Main street was damaged to such an extent by the flood last Friday that it Is al most Impassible, and wll require a vast amount of labor and money to put it in shape. The old Benton road, near the Orln Bi owning property, Is washed to such an extent that It Is temporarily abandoned. Mrs. V. It. Gardner Is confined to her homo with muscular rheumatism. The "Deestrick Skule," which was given at the Academy Friday night, was repeated by request last Saturday night and was one of the best enter tainments given there this winter." Percy, the pastor, occupied the pulpit of the Presbyterian church Sunday morning. The Presby terian and Methodist churches did not suffer by the flood. Rev. James P. Ware, of Grace church, held services In the Presbyterian chapel Sunday morning. Grace church suffered se verely. The basement where Sunday schoVd is held and kitchen and dining llxtuies are kept was filled with water. Piano, books and furniture were float ing near the celling. The Sunday school room was Mutely remodeled and new carpeted. All day Saturday and late at night one fire engine wns pumping water from basements of city hall and the Durland, Thompson & Co. shoe fac tory. Another was pumping from Grace church and tho Allen house. Here the basement was filled with water cutting off furnace, provisions and kitchen services. The two en gines were working on Sunday pump ing from the postofllce, Liberty hall and other buildings. The construction f a foot bridge was commenced on Satur day to connect uptown and downtown on Main street. The sidewalks in many places on the cross streets and Second street is very much torn up. Of residences, that of E. C. Mumford suffered most. Water coveied the first Moor and Ice injured the exterior. Photographers and amateurs with their koducks weie out in large numbers, se curing many splendid views. The coun ty commissioners will at once erect a temporary wood bridge on Main street. The fire companies engines have been kept busy pumping watertfrom cellars. All shops and factories suspended work and business was paralyzed on Satur day. Today all teams and men avail able are engaged clearing the streets and cellars. It is impossible to place an estimate on the damage done. He was botn In South Gibson, Susquehanna county, Pa July G, 1833, Ho came to Salem til October, 1884, where he lias since resided. He served during the Rebellion 111 Co. I, 101th Pennsylvania Volunteers, en listing January 5, 1SC3, and was dis charged at the close of the war. De ceased was a member of Captain War ren G, Moore Post, No. 287. Ho leaves a wife and one don, Jra O., at home, to mourn his loss. He was a good citizen, honest in all dealings and held In high esteem in the community where he lived. Domlnlck King, an aged resident of Duryca, died yesterday morning after several weeks' illness. A few mouths ago one of his sons died and since then he has become melancholy. Thence down to Jerry Wright's, where It washed out A new stone arch bridge. Next wns W. C. Smith's mills, known as Stales pond.
