There Is Much Anixlety Among Ho tel Keepers as to What the Court Will Do. There is no end of anxiety among the liquor dealers as to what will trans pire In court, this week, when the throe Judges will receive and pass upon the license applications. The recent svholc snle refusal of applications In the neighboring county of Luzerne is ac countable for no small part of the anx iety. Twentj- protests have been filed in this county and in ever Instance the protest is a vigorous one. Nine of them were filed by tho Municipal League and the league agents arc pre pared to prove that their protcsL Is svell grounded. Three protests came from the police department, and Super intendent Day is ready svith evidence to show that his assertions concerning the disordeiij character of the places attacked are not idly made. The other eight, which came from the smaller towns are backed by long lists of sign ers who give svhat they believe are good and sufficient reasons for their re monstrating. The hearings In these cases and on the applications for new licenses svlll likely keep the court busy for three or four days. There are 770 applications on file this year, a deorease of 18 as compared svlth 1001. In the city of Seranton the num ber of applications is 228 or BO less than last year. rfv'kxSJ5J'xJU5Hx52xyi y5Jiiffxs)xx5xX?53vJM Sentence Day in Court. Sixty of the nlnets--seven cases set down for trial at last week's special term of quarter sessions svere disposed of in five days. In most of them, -er-dicts of not guilty were entered by direction of court for one reason or another, principalis' because of the absence of prosecutors. Six persons svere convicted and in some of these sentence was imposed by Judges YVhea ton and Ferris, Saturday morning. James Murray, who was found guilty of assaulting Patrolman Tom Jones, in a street ear strike riot on Stone ave nue, was sentenced by Judge Wheaton to paf a flue of J15 and spend fifteen days In the county jail. Alfred Long, svlto was convicted of stealing household goods which he had disposed of to his landlord, Joseph Dalles-, to settle a. rent bill, svas sen tenced by Judge Ferris to pay a fine of $13 and undergo thirty days' imprison ment. Charles Irdlkl and Joseph Brown svere sentenced to pay a fine of $15 and costs for Injuring a horse they hired from Liveryman George E. Ather ton. Justice of the Peace James Bell, svho svas convlctod of embezzling $13S from Michael Kranlskl, svas called for sen tence, 'but, on motion of his attorney, II. L. Taylor, sentence svas deferred for two sveeks to give an opportunity for filing tea.sons for a new trial, Sen tence was nlso deferred, for one sveek, In the ease of Henrs' Watkfna, convict ed of recklessly driving over a child at Jessup, The Jury in the case of Albert Smith, the newsboy ohnrged svlth embezzling $3.70 from the Lackawanna News com paii)'. returned a verdict of not guilt), Saturday morning. The verdict was accompanied by n suggestion to the judgi that he gi-e the boy a "severe warning." Judge Wheaton did not act on tho suggestion, Harry Comptop, svho svas convicted of forging a marriage certificate, was called for sentence before Judge Ed wurds, but sentence svas deferred, at the request of his attorney, A. A. Chase, until tho divorce proceedings now pending are at an end. On account of tho suspension of traf fic the surety cases set down for Satur day, were continued, Freedmnn-Okell litigation. A hearing svas had Saturday before Judge Newcomb In the equity fruno brought by M, Freedman to restrain Attorney Cieorge M. Okell and H, Wil liams from Issuing an execution against him on a claim for $100. Freedman alleges he engaged Attor ney Okell to settle claims (or him and that svhen this particular claim svas negotiated at fifty cents on the dollar, Okell hud "H. Williams" buy it in and then Induced Freedman to secure Its payment by putting up bond for a stay of execution, Freedman declares that he believes n, Williams Is a fictitious person and that Attorney Okell him self Is the real owner of the claim, Mr, Okell denies that ho owns the claim and furthermore avers that he svas not the attorney for Freedman but for Freedman's creditors.
