the Lehigh Vullcy Coat company, hIUi

Kerlous oxplonlon just about noon to
day, which resulted In tho death ot ones

face, neck and hands; lioily bruised.
THOMAS JOXKS, u( Knit Northampton slicel,
Willcs-Biuo; burned about exposed por
tion, condition t.ci loirs; unmarried nun; aged
56 j cars.
JOHN" LKWK, of Plains township, n oung nun,
linnidiricd! slightly btirncil about face .mil
hands. Taken to his home.
JOsKPII 1 Ill'ltKi:, of X'nrlli ri.inl.lln lrcol,
Wilkes-Kane, foimeily of Wllkca-Itjrio; 1111
iiidiricd; aged 23 .M'ars; bums ery serious
about exposed part", bad contusions about
tho he.id. Tal.ru to Wllkcsdlanc. hospital.
As will he seen by the above, the
victims are mostly nil residents of
WUItes-Uarre. i'hey were members of
one of the Valley Coal company's en
Kineei corps, and were at work today
In the Coxey mine. They arrived at
the Coxey .shaft about S o'clock this
morning, and, accompanied by Flro
Boss Jerry Mooney, set out to perform
soilio of their regular posting work. At
the time ot the accident they had just
finished surveying In an abandoned
chamber within 200 yards of the foot
of the shaft. Flro Boss Mooney warned
tho engineers not to enter any other
chamber until ho proceeded to at-cer-tnln
the condition aa to gas. Retiring
from the one chamber the men pro
ceeded up the gangway, Mooney lin
gering behind to place a wooden rail
In front of tho chamber they were just
leaving so that no tnie might enter be
cause there was a little gas theie.
The rest of the men loitered along
the gangway awaiting Mooney, but
one of the number walked a little
ahead of the others and thoughtlessly
stepped into tho next chamber. Im
medla'tely there was an explosion.
There was apparently not much gas
in the place as the explosion was light
and did but little damage to the Inter
ior of the mine. The chamber was a low
one and this probably accounted for
the serious work of the small accum
ulation. Employes were at work in
tho mine as usual and hurried to the
scene to give assistance to tho burned
men. who were taken to the surface
and .their burns dressed. Ambulances
WercTsecured from nearby collieries to
assist in moving the. Injured.
It was plainly evident that Davis'
condition was critical and his head
had come In contact with a piece of
timber when thrown by the force of
the explosion, and the skull was frac
tured. He was hurriedly taken to the
Pittston hospital but died 10 minutes
after reaching there.
Young Langnn is a son of the late
mine foreman, James Langan, whoge
body Is among those entombed in the
Twin mine since the big cave-In or a

with his widowed mother on North
Main street.
Davis, whoso Injuries resulted fa
tally, had been in the employ of the
Valley company only since last Mon
day, and lived with his widowed
mother In WIlkes-Barre.
The Coxey mine, wherein the acci
dent occurred, is only a recent posses
sion of the Lehigh Valley Coal com
pany, having been purchased by them
from the Seneca Coal company. It is
one of the mines In the district In
charge of Superintendent Thomas
Thomas, of "Wllkcs-Barre. The work
ings of the Coxey adjoin the Ill-fated
Twin shaft, where the BS men were en
tombed a few years ago, tho openings
of both shafts being within 200 feet of
ench other.
