moving to Uewollyn, Schuylkill coun

Mrs, Council was born In Vnlo-. Her
mother had preceded her father In
death and when he passed away situ
was adopted Into the family of a
Scotchman named McCan, who lived
at Ltcwdllyn.
Mr. Connell met his wife ut Lewell.vn
while intending her father's funeral.
Ho was thou working for forty cents
a day as n mule driver In the mines at
Llewellyn, having gone there from
Nova Scotia, in 1SU. He was a caller
at tho MoCau homo before he met the
girl they afterwards adopted. He was
a more frequent caller after Annlo
Lawrence became ti member of tho
family. In about three years tin; Mc
Caus had to part with their adopted
(laughter. The young driver boy had
been studying during his leisure time
and some feU- yearn before his mar
riage secured a position In Ilnsileton
as a stationary engineer.
Their wedding ceremony was a very
quint, unpretentious affair. It was
performed In the evening at Mlners
vlllc, tho town of which Llewellyn was
a suburb, by Rev. Roderick Williams,
pastor of the Welsh Congregational
church, who will be remembered by all
the older Welsh people of the anthrn
clte regions. He also baptized Mr. and
Mrs. Council's youngest child, I3y.ni,
when he was here on a visit.
John English, a brother-lu-law of
Mr. Connell's brother James, wus best
man. Elisabeth Lawrence, eldest sis
ter of Mrs. Connell, was bridesmaid.
Both witnesses have since died.
The day before their marriage. Mr.
and Mrs. Connell attended the wed
ding of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Ful
ton, of Shamokln. Tho Fultons AVed
nesdny celebrated their llfttcth anni
versary. They were among the guests
of the Connell celebration yesterday.
Mr. and Airs. Connell began their
married life in Hazleton, beginning
housekeeping at once. After three
ears they moved to this region, set
tling at Mlnooku, where Mr. Connell
secured the position of outside superin
tendent of the works of the Susque
hanna and Wyoming A'alloy Railroad
and Coal company, which was then
operating the old Stafford and Na
tional collieries. They lived in a
double house under the hill on which
St. Joseph's church now stands. One
lde of the house wus occupied by Mr.
Connell's brother, James, who was in
side superintendent of the two mines.
Thoy continued to reside in Mlnooka
for sixteen years.
In 1S70 the lirm of AVilliam Connell
& Co. was organized to operate the
Meadow Brook colliery. This was tho
beginning of Mr. Connell's life as a
coal operator. In less than a quarter
of a century ho came to be one of the
most influential operators In the an
thracite region and, Incidentally, head
oC the Anthracite Coal Operators' asso
ciation. In lSTl' lie built his present home, at
tiie corner of Clay avenue and A'ine
street. The nearest houses to his then
were the old Hitchcock and Frothlng
hr.m'hDines, the one at the corner of
Qulncy nnd A'ine and the other at the
corner of Qulncy and Mulberry.
Mr. nnd Mrs. Connell have had eleven
children. The eldest dnushter died in
January, 1S."7, at Mlnooku, while an In
fant. The others nil grew to adult life.
Three of the remaining ten have also
passed away: Airs. S. AV. Edgar, Mrs.
E. J. Dimmlck and AVilliam A. Connell.
The other seven children are living at
home or In tho immediate neighbor
hood, which to Mr. nnd Airs. Connell
forms one of the arentcst consolations
of their old age. Tho family of which
AVilliam nnd Annlo Connell are tho
progenitors Is comprised as follows:

Miss Leo Pratt. They have three chil
dren, Lawrence, Carlton and Lucille.
