THE LAND OF DIAMONDS.
Interesting Little Book on South
Africa by Rev. James Hughes.
"The Land of Gold and Diamonds, or
Ten Years in South Africa," is the ef
fective title of a little book just Issued
by Rev. James Hughes, of this city,
formerly of Klinberly, It records many
of the author's Impressions of South
Africa, its people, leading men, native
races, mineral and agrieultur.il re
sources and social possibilities in the
years to come.
There is much Information in the
book that many of Us should, but don't
know. For instance, Cape Oolony.
though larger than Texas, had before
the present war only about four times
the population of Scrnnton, if by popu
lation we mean white persons immi
grant. Minus soldiers, Its white popu
lation today must be considerably less.
Natal, HabUtoland, ZuUilantl, Orange
Itlver State, the Transvaal and Bechu
sinaland together have an area six
times that of Colorado and are thinly
populated; and Rhodesia, on the north,
English by the grace of that remark
able man, Cecil Rhodes, of whom Rev.
Mr. Hughes gives some reminiscences,
lias an area eight and one-half times
that of Great Britain. Altogether here
Is a total area more than half that of
the United States, excluding Alaska
an empire whose hills are full of gold,
diamonds and other precious deposits
and whoso valleys and plains, ample
enough to sustain a population of mill
ions, need only a little tickling nnd
some intelligent irrigation to smile In
harvests as rich as the phenomenal
yields of the mines.
"The great drawback In agriculture
is the lack of water," writes Mr.
Hughes. ".Sometimes they have no rain
for five or six months. Dining such a
time everything Is burned up. Beast
and bird and vegetation suffer to a
fearful extent. The traveler can pro
ceed for hundreds of miles over the
veldt and not see u blade of grass, a
green leaf, or any other signs of life,
and yet In less than twenty-four hours
after a good shower of rain the whole
veldt, which a few hours before had
appeared perfectly dead and sterile,
breathes and blooms; a mantle of varie
gated beauty covers what a short time
ago appeared like the huge graveyard
of all vegetable life. If sulllclent water
could be procured, farming would prove
very profitable, for the soil Is eminently
productive."
We are told that there Is an abund
ance of water beneath the surface, at
distances varying from six to one hun
dred feet; so that the problem of Irri
gation Is not In reality dllllctilt. All
that It needs, apparently, Is a gener
ation of peaceful development. After
reading what Mr. Hughes has to say
with regard to the potential valuo of
South Africa, wo are better prepared
than formerly to comprehend the empire-building
ambitions of Cecil Rhodes,
Joseph Chamberlain, Lord Mllner and
the other Englishmen who have given
so much of their time and means to the
development of this great area that
only ti few years ago was the abode of
wild men and wild beasts.
The dedication of the book is to Rev.
Dr. Charles K, Robinson, "with grate
ful reminiscences of many kindnesses
from one who might be justly described
as a faithful friend, nn honorable
gentleman, and a devout servant of the
Lord."
