An Enthusiastic Contest. The contest, which closed f-'alurdny cvenliiK aroused the most Intense en thuslasni anions the boys and (jlrls (and 'some of the older folks, loo) of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Lists of words formed out of the letters In "Sernnton Tribune" were sent In from every section of tlio city and from scores of towns throughout this sec tion of the state. Letters and pack ntres came In by the armful through The postolllco and were brouiiht In by the contestants themselves or sent In by parents or other relatives, la some Instances shy youiiR ladles of It or in years would send in their lists by younger brothers, preferring not to meet the Contest Editor themselves. In the majority of cases the rules of the contest seemed to be clearly under stood, but there were many amusing Incidents. Some little chaps would bring In a list of from live to twenty words expecting to take a prize home with them right away. A few such lists came by mall with full instructions as to the mailing of the watch. Hut all were good natured and those who failed to get in among the first twenty six we are sure will join with The Tri bune in good wishes for the more for tunate ones. "Why Webster's International Dictionary Was Used. I3esUIc the lists sent in by the siici ces tui contestants, whose n.imes appear In , the accompanying tabic, there were many ery" Mng lists of words received which failed to have more than 1.7.VJ words, the lowest on the honor role, after 'hey were corrected. Some of these nud as many as 3,0(W words, and no doubt the majority of them were found In some dictionary, probably the stan dard, but they were not In "Webster's International Dictionary" of 189S. It was absolutely necessary to choose some one book to judge the contest by, and The Tribune selected the one that would be found in the majority of homes. If some one book had not been chosen it would have been the task of ,i lifetime to have ascertained if the words on the various lists were admls sable. There are probably half a dozen different dictionaries on the market, and where a word was in question, if no one book had been selected, it would have been necessary to look th.it word up In each book. Under such circum stances it would have taken two or three weeks to have verified each list. would discover why they were not In the key list. In every list there would also be n few eriors In spoiling. Letters would be transposed or omitted, unci these would be ruled out. Then there were those who wilfully changed the spelling of words lo ninke them have the rluht letters. As an In stance, there were a few lists where such words as "country" ami "county" were spoiled "coiinlrle" and "cotinlle." Sometimes where a word had a final "e" that would make It contain two "e's," the last "c" was dropped. "Plurals formed by adding 's and 'es' not allowed." Tills rule was vio lated In many cases. It was necessary to make such a rule as otherwise every noun and erb In the dictionary would have hud added to It tin "s." All other plurals are given In the dictionary Im mediately alter the noun, as "Country pi. countries," and where the letters weie cot red these wele admitted. "Words" only were admitted. 1'nder this Interpretation sulllxcs and prellxcs were not allowed, as they are not "words" but only parts of words. Com pound words wete admitted, as a com pound word Is "a word." In some In stances the dictionary dellnes combina tions of two or more words, as "sea lobln," and as these are cleurl separ ate words and could In no ease be con sidered "a word," thev were not ad mitted. "A," "1" and "("" were ad mitted, as they are cleat ly words. Contractions, such as "ain't," weie not admitted, as they are not complete words. The Successful Contestants. The winning contestant, William T. K. KodiigucK. Is a biother of Charles Kodrlgue'. (who secured llrst place In The Tribune's 1900 Educational Con test), anil Is it bright little fellow of 11 years. Ills biother, Charles, had four more words In the list he sent In, but accidentally misspelled a few and Is in second place, with only one word be tween him and the lop. The Contest Keillor's first duly was to go through the dictionary very care fully and make out what was termed a "key list." This served as a founda tion for comparison with the longer lists as they came in, Kvery woid was veritled. If the contestant had a word which was not on the hoy list, that word was looked up ami If found eot rect was Inserted in the key list. This plan was followed right through until the end, and as a result many words were added to the editor's list, Kvery list that hud more than 1,7.12 words, tho lowest In the table of winners, was ex iimlncd with the greutest care, It was a tremendous tusk, but It has been completed, and the successful contest ants eati bo connratulated that their .vork has stood the test, Only those who have been over tlio .dictionary once to get out the words can appreciate what 11 moans to go over It hundreds of times, The Contest Kill tor knows a great deal more about the Knglish language than he did before thu contest, and no doubt the same thing eun be said for the contestants. Educational Advantages. Tho Tribune has been complimented many times on tho educational advant age of tho contest. Fathers and mothers vho havu brought In lists have re 'unrked: "Here Is my boy's list of ,vords, and whether ho wins anything lr not It has done hliu u lot of good, tin hits had thu proper combinations of letters itioru llrmly fixed In his mind, and it has tiiUL'ht him the value of writing carefully." Others have spoken of how their chll (lren had been ltd to look up the mean ing of words which were, new to them, while still others claim that they have learned to operate thu typewriter with greater accuracy and speed. There may be a few who have over looked these advantages and when they ! find that their boy or girl has failed to secure a prize, when their list was I longer than tho othets, will wonder how they could luivu fulled, In any event It will bo Interesting to know just why many of thu words weru ruled out. mill Is only two woids below tho win ning number. Certtude Kilpatrlck, of I'arbondale, lost hut a little over 100 words, and had one of the cleanest lists received, as there was hardly a list with less than that number of wrong words. Dolly Fllley and Lathi op Hevan had the longest original lists, in the table of winners, hut it was evident that they bail used some other dictionary than Webster's, as their lists con tained about, a thousand words that could not be found in that book, and many that weie in Webster's were omitted. Many Very Neat Lists. It would be Impossible to give the names of nM that sent In very neat lists, but the majority weie most cred itable. .Many were typewritten, while others were written beautifully. A num ber were handed in Hat, without even How the Gifts Are to Be Presented to the Successful Bous and Girls. The most Important part of the whole contest Is yet to come. The boys and gills are sill waiting to learn how they are to reelve the prizes they have won. The Tribune would like to have us many as possible of the twenty-six young people, whose names are pi lut ed In the table on this page, come to The Tribune ofllce at -i.JiO o'clock this afternoon, nnd each will be given an opportunity to select the gift they would most prefer on the list published herewith. The figures In the table show just what Tho Tilbune pa'd for each present and they are published in the order of their value, but this does not mean that Hobert L. Spencer, the boy in thirteenth place, must take tho girl's skates, nor that Esther II. Hopewell, who is sixteenth, must have the set of boxing gloves, just because that Is the sixteenth gift. 'William Kodrigmz will have the first choice, and It Is quite natural that he should choose the gold watch, lint he can have anything else on the list In stead of that if he wishes. It Is ex pected, however, that the 111 si live will lake the watches, and If Miss Gertrude Kilpatrlck. of Carbondale. and Miss Marguerite Malone, of Forest City, um unable to get to The Tribune ofllce this afternoon, slher watches will be sent to them. Next comes Willie Toy, in sixth place, and hf will have his choice of any of the other gifts. He can have the writ ing desk, the game board, or anything else if lie prefers. After he has made his selection, Raymond C, Hodges will have his choice, and the others ill the order in which their names appear In the list of successful contestants. Itobert L. Spencer, who Is in thir teenth place, is too far from Scranlon to be able to get here this afternoon, and the Contest Kdltor. who was a boy once himself, will make a selection for him of a gift that would be most suit able for si boy of thirteen years. There ate three other winning con testants who are out of town Misses Carrie Harlow and Florence Stone, of Hawley, and Miss Madeline It. Walk er, of Carbondale. If they are unable to get to Scranlon in time this after noon, the most suitable gift of the greatest value will be set aside for them when their turn lo select arrives. The Tribune would bo glad to wait until its out-of-town friends could get to Scranlon, but It seems advisable to give out the presents this afternoon so that the boys and girls can have their Christmas gifts on Christmas. FORTUNATE ESTIMATORS Those Who Came Nearest to the Number of Correct Words in the Winning List. While lists of words were coining in by the hundred, coupon estimates were being poured on the contest lOdltor's desk by the thuurauds. Hundreds of CHARLES W. RODRIGUEZ. WILLIAM J. S, RODRIGUEZ. Interpretation of the Rules. A great many lists lost more than a hundred words through using wiong letters or using a letter more than once when It occurred but once In "Serunton Tribune." This was a very natural error unci the editor was led to look up inuny words In tho dictionary before he being folded, and these were a Joy to the Contest IMItor. Some were tied with delicate ribbons, red, pink, blue, yellow and green, Then there were thosu which were not so neat. They etimo rolled, which was against thu printed rules; they came, written on both sides of the paper, which was also against the rules; thero weie Foino In which tho words woio not numbered, or were not In alphabetical order, then there were some written on paper of all sorts and sizes, sotnu writ ten on paper bags, and even on wall paper. The two ladles residing in Nicholson will have cheeks forwarded to them today. THE WINNING LIST OF WORDS letters, filled full of tho little blanks, ctiuie In in every mall, until It was nec essary to assign two men to the tusk of sorting and classifying them ac cording to numbers. Soon after the contest opened It was found that the winner would have over 1,600 words, and accordingly all esti mates below that number were thrown aside. It was also ascertained that It would be Impossible) to get moru than -.300. so that those above that num ber fared the same fate. All coupons between these two figures were care fully numbered in the order In which they eame In, and sorted so that those of each hundred were kept separate.
