! HER POINT OF VIEW
SOMKHOUV invited me to write my
views of anarchy and anarchists
this week. Of course somebody
meant it as a joke, that my views on
this subject should be interestinp; to
any one, must be n joke. "Why not?
In the first place I haven't any views,
and then, loo, everything- worth while
has been said about the matter. A
great deal that has been said amounts
to talk and that is all. We Americans
are a volatile people. AVe were most
intensely angry witli the anarchists
ten days ago and breathed out tlneat
cnings against them and wrote vol
uminous resolutions about what ought
to be done witli the whole class. Now
we haven't even courage enough to
hold an indignation meeting with a
view to making this street car strike
settle itself. We are really tiresome in
our protestations of bravery" and jus
tice, but somehow we do get pathetic
ally meek when there is a clinnco to
do something besides talk or compose
decorative resolutions.
A mere woman, I am not supposed to
say anything original on such a vast
topic, but from a woman's point of
view It seems to mo that In the main
being an anarchist or not being an an
archist is just tlie difference between
sofa pillows or frills and bad whiskey.
Tiecnuse T choose to spend my earn
ings on the sofa-pillows and tho frills
or In trying to help the nearest sad
one, Instead of drinking bad whiskey
and smoking worse cigars, I am the
Incentive to anarchy among those who
prefer the bad whiskey. It Irritates
them to see me taking a brief needed
rest among my sofa, pillows and
adorned with my frills. They do not
believe In a social economy which has
In It sofa pillows nnd frills. It should
be dirt, and loud talking and bad air.
There Is a great deal in tho atmosphere
to influence mental development. I be
lieve If the worst typo of anarchists
could be Induced to batho dally and
get used to themselves In good clothes
and take systematic exercise In the
open air tliey would sturt on a new
tack and probably become .useful citl
s:ens. Then they know Utile about the gos
pel of work heliur for the worker tlie
Joy of It. the benefit nnd the gain. The
Simon pure anarchist does not believe
In work at all. Although they do say
that out In Patcrson some of tho quiet
est and therefore the most danserous
nmtrchistH are the Italians who earn
high wages three or four times as
much as they could earn In Italy, As
skilled operatives in tho mills, the are
said to wear line clothes and to conduct
themselves In general like young
Americans of easy circumstance, They
do llttlo ranting but assiduously read
Tom Paine, Voltulre and hysterical
French literature. Yet It is not from
Hint class that the assassins come and
I vent tiro to believe that theso men
who nre saving money and gradually
becoming capitalists will have a oliungo
of heart before many yenrs. Tlio best
rcilpo for making a peuccable citizen
out of an anarchist Is cither to shoot
him or persuade hliu to put his earn
ings In tlio bank. As soon as he begins
to draw dividends the lion of his an
archy will begin to roar mildly and he
Will take, to having Ids hair cut and
wearing a civilized tie.
There aro other anarchists of a ills,
contented and srumbllng but harmless
enough type. Here Is a recpn for
browing them. Ttiltu otto well ineuulng
young man, with or without brains;
stew him continuously every day in
the New York .lournal nnd niter six
months you will have an Incipient an
archist with a mental snuiul that will
he entirely unable to rend any other
paper or see any color but yellow with
tho Journal news of everything from
tho Schley case down to an arrest of
a drunk in Podunk. I defy anybody

I thought so. Their Influence saps the
judicial mind and unfits it to form an
Impartial opinion of anything. They
are like a fussj old woman who for

"weather-breeder."
Sometimes I fall into a meditative
mood about all these great problems
which are vexing tho master myitis and
torturing tlie hearts of so many, and
1 wonder if after all It isn't better to
reach out a citilck hand to the stumb
ling little child along our path, to
speak cheerily to the weary old man on
his way home front daily toil, to smile
always on those about us; to have a
swift ear of sympathy for the sor
rowing, to answer softly the angry
one, and to do our work as well as we
can than to go raging up and down
theearth because It Is growing so proud
and cold, or to sit at home idly and
grumble because the world Is out of
joint. I have always been so glad that
no voice seemed to call me out of the
shadows to go forth as a reformer to
set this old world right. It must be a
terlble thing for one person or one set
of persons to feel that upon nobody
else rests any respnnslbllty in the
matter,
Tt Is a pleasure nowadays to meet a
young ma'n jvho has to work for a liv
ing and yet who hasn't a grievance
against about everything, and whose
creed doesn't rend "Whatever is, Is
wrong." A young man like this de
clared the other day, "There was never
