this point. The company now proposes
to plan- steel girders fur tho track,

Judgo J. W. Carpenter In court room
No. 1! yesterday heard nn nppcal ot tho
Lackawanna Iron & Steel company
from the assessment of tho city and
tounty assessors: on ccitnln pioperty
In the Dlovonth nnd Seventeenth wards
of this city which the company con
tends Is too high. The contention Is
based hugely on the fact that shops,
mllM nnd furnaces have been practi
cally abandoned by the company nnd
nre being dismantled ns tapldly as pos
sible.
The properties on which the company
nsks that the assessment be reduced
follow: Sawmill anil offices, assess
ment $1,000, want It cut to $1,000;
blast furnace, $10"i,000 to $30,000; North
Steel mill, $150,000 to $.".0,000; old engine
houses, $19,200 to $12,000; mule barn
$.",300 to $1,000. Tho nssessinonl for city
nnd county purposes Is Identical ex
cept ns to the blast furnace nnd North
Steel mill. The former Is assessed for
$130,000 for county purposes nnd tho
latter for $200,000. A pattern shop li
nssessed nt $3,500 for tounty purposes,
which tho compnny nsks to have
stricken off entirely, alleging that tho
building was torn clown some time ago.
It is not nssessed for city purposes.
