The exeetitlvi' I'ominlitee of the
Mrllici': met ni.shop Hobun yesterday
iiltonioon at the lattot's lesldenee. Iie
;iik stuumoned theie by a message
,'iciti him, and iiUlinitpli nolhlns very
ilfllr.lte could be learned regard inn this
nieellnf,-, It Is known that the infor
mation siveii the Kirli by tho bishop
was of a most (iieournping nature.
None of the opera tots weie picsent in
person, but messages had been sent,
which announced their willingness to
have the bishop act as a mediator. In
l he tatter's letter to Superintendent
Havis lie sihkoii roe a personal meet
ing to diiciihf the situation and also
made homo suggestions regarding pos-.-ible
methods of adjusting the difficul
ties, it is understood that the S.iu
iiulnt hiiperiulcndeut gave an encour
aging answer.
The strlheis have called a special
meeting of the tfauquoit hard ftllk
workers for this afternoon, and it is
believed that a proposition from .Su-Ki-iritendont
Davis will be submitted.
The girls are now willing to settle on
tetms somewhat less advantageous
than thou- they lirst demanded, and
are willing to meet the management
half way.
Impiovements at Plttston.
The Seneca Coal company at Pitts
tnn has a number of important im
provements under way to facilitate
the mining and preparing of coal. One
large central boiler nlunt ha? been
consti acted to luinish steam for all
purposes the company may require it
fu At the Coxey shaft a large dyna
mo has been placed to furnish povr
for hauling coal from the Coxey to the
Twin shall. This s-ystem of haulage
Is also to be extended to the Coxey
shaft.
Conveyoi- will be placed at the head
to cairy the coal to the breaker. Seii
il umping cages will also be placed,
which will do away with the headmen
it both the Coxey and Twin shafts.
Tin ce small loiomotives . aie now in
sei vice ouside In hauling and trans
ferring the coal. They intend in time
to get along without them, for with
,he coal chutes nearer the breaker and
'he I'onvevfirs canylng the coal to the
ncaker the expenses will be lessened
considerably.
Will Not Take Them Back.
A committee of the employes uf the
Lehigh Vallev Coal company on stilke
at the Prospect, Midvale, Oakwood and
Henry mines, wailed on the ofliciais
ol the company yesteid.iy and en-
liavoicd to have the tluee who wero
hsi'hiiiged reinstated. The committee
men argued that the jig tender should
not be asked to do an oiler's work,
.ind thai the engineer had iusli acted
i no in. in not to leave his post.
Superintendent chase relused to take
the men back. II,. said thai the men
were dlsehaiged for disobeying orders
when damage to the company's prop
er! v was llneatened and they eould
not afford to keep such people In their
employ. lr Chase asked if the men
iwmld tefufec to throw a bucket of
water on a lire If uno had resulted,
liitnuse ii was not their work, Ilo ex
plained the relations between tho em
ploye! s and employes and said llio
men should obey tho oideis of the
foreman, TJie stilke was declared
without the .sanction of the miners'
union, Willfcs'. Han e Record.
That Locomotive Combine.
The bankers who am intoiested In
effecting a combination of the gif-at
locomotive manufacturers of the coun
try declare that, there will be great
economy in standardizing locomotive
equipment and making the engines
uniform. The cost of repairs Is a very
Important item, as it sometimes re
quites tho shipment of parts from thu
manufacturers a long distaneo to tho
railway requiring it, and not Inn o
quently special wurkmen ate sout to
make repairs when an piikIiio Is jn an
especially bad condition.
On tho theory that consumptive de
111.mil should bo met fiom the neatest
productive point, there will bo great
economy in manufacturing a typo of
locomotlvo which would combine the
best points of all and supply the mil
ways from 1hc shops nemos t .'it hand.
Thejo will further be an advantage in
tho orlclnal sale, as In times of de
pression tho builders could manufuo
tiire and carry In stock supplies which
would 'be In demand ultimalely by all
tho railway companies; For the expoi t
Irado there would bo great benelits de
ilved, as parts of locomotives could bo
constantly on hand to be sent to anv
part of tho world. New York Journal.
State of the Market,
The API II loiter of the Anthracite
coal Operators' association says about
the maikct:
"During the past month tho market
was much disturbed because of un
settled labor conditions and the possi
bility of a Btrlke. The satisfactory
lonclusloii of this matter and the an
nouncement of spring prices by the
various companies has again given a
oId footing and normal buying Is go
ing forward.
"J'ho chcular of prices Issued has
fixed discounts for each mouth and
definite terms of sale, which, It Is ex
pected, will be rigidly adhered to by
tne companies. Whether or not this
will be done depends upon the buying
movement and the" course followed
with commission houses.
