patent was giantcd a few days ago.
Tho appliance. Is so arranged that
the opening and closing mechanism on
the door Is all under the floor of thp
car, leaving tho tloor surface smooth
and uninterrupted. Tho appliance Is
partlctilaily adapted to grain and coal
cars, which can now be unloaded with
out having to (llsttub tho side or end
doors on 'the car.
The door opens downwind, and Is
closed by means of toggle-levers sup
poi tod thereunder, a shaft operating
In connection with the levers. A prac
tical test of tho uppllupcc lms been
made, both with grain and co.il, ami
the doors worked admirably.

department, was turned out of tho
Cliff works yesterday by the Dick
son Manufacturing company. It Is a
companion engine to the "America."

engines was tested. Tho boiler was
"rigged" up with the necessary ap
pliances and backed out of the shop,
and steamed up while yet testing on

Athletic Association.
A buge audience thronged the main
room of the School of the Lackawanna
last night to listen to the excellent
numbers of the lhetoiieol entertain
ment glen for the benellt of the Lack
awanna Athletic association. The pro
gramme was opened by a piano solo
splendidly executed by Miss Flqrenee
Kline, and well rendered declamations
on "Washington's fllrtlulay" and
"Crossing the llublcon" then followed
by .Joseph Witts and McNalr A. Phil
lips. Miss Minnie S.untpi- was loudly
applauded for her execution of a dlill
rult piano solo, and Miss firace Cool

Girl Said."
J. Taylor Foeler l pelted the classic
