MASONS IN HARD LUCK.
Start for a Banquet in Blnf-humton,
nnd nn Engine Breaks Down.
A number of Masons from this city
nnd surrounding towns went to Illng
hnmton on Wednesday night to en
Joy a blow-out nnd tho lino degree
work given by Otsenlngo lodge, Frea
nnd Accepted Masons, of that city.
The party split up Into two squads,
one- going by way of the Delaware,
Lackawanna and Western from
Wanton, nnd ths second section de
ciding to ao by the Delnwnre nnd Hud
son. With tho former crowd this
story has nothing to do.
The Delaware and HuJsoti Journey
ors boarded tho trnln for Nlnevah at
1.30 o'clock nnd nil wont welt until
they reached the railroad yard about
half n mile along. There the engine,
unnccutomed to pulling1 such n party
of solid, v oil-fed men, balked nnd
could not bo persuaded to act good and
go along serenely. So It was unyoked
and an hour and n half was spent In
getting another In trim, while tins
bltio lodgo members ppent the fleet
ing minutes In trying not to get into
it mood to match tho trimmings of
tholr nptons.
After thfi second englnn got started,
It went along nil right, but much
slower than tho schedule called for,
and when It wasn't stopping at sta
tions it hesitated considerably all
along the line. Visions of the elabor
ate spioad awaiting them at Ulng
liamton helped to dispel tho Bloom
for ii while, until It was fiUrciced
that If the train wasn't hurried up .t
bit thoy would miss that, too. Then
the gloom settled down as thick as a
fop
U about half past eleven o'clock, a
disgusted looking lot of F. Ms
cuived admission at the Masonic tem
ple In ninghamton. When they had
obtained It, they sought tho dining
loom. Tho supper was over. Mini
clouds of smoke were swirling over
tho heads of a ciowd of contented
looking fellows, nnd to ndd to their
mlsety one of Carbondnlo's most emi
nent Masons was telling a funny story
amid salvos of applause. They were
cscoitod to the well. cleaned tables,
however, nnd a careful search tevealed
enough eatables to supply their appe
tites Hut they had entirely missed
the degree work, for which they had
travelled all those weary miles.
Thos-e from this city who got to
Ulnghamton in time for all tho cere
monies, by going by the De-law-are,
Lncliawiniiii and Western, were Dr.
W. V.. Fletcher and John T5. Shannon.
It would bo cruel to tell the names
of the disappointed ones.
