Consldeied at a Meeting of the Rail
ways Committee.
The railway committee of tho r-olect
council met yesterday afternoon and
considered the ordinance trr.uitlnfj a
franchise to the Central Rnpld Tran
sit company, but took no fotmal ae
I tlon deciding to postpone further con
sideration of the measure till a future
date. They will be ready lo report It
at the next meeting of select council
which will not be bold until Peb. T.
It In certain that the committee will
recommend to councils the adoption of
nnd amendment strlklnu, out that
nluuse of tho ordinance which limits
the tax to be placed upon the gross
receipts of the company at one per
cent. Ono of the members of the com
mittee said yesterday after the meet
ing: ,
"The city should reserve tho right to
tax tho street railway companies of
tho city any uniform umnunt that may
bo reasonable. A special rule should
not bo fixed for one company und then
have another company compelled to
pay a higher tax."

the citizens of this city to bemoan re
garding the heavy burden of taxutlon
which they labor under and to cry out
lo the gods for relief. It Is Indiscrim
inately charged that ftrmnton Is a hor
ribly expensively 1 tin city and that
councils aro continuously engaged In
the pleasant pastime of throwing tho
peoplci's money to the four winds of
heaven.
There may be a deal of truth in these
charges but after a careful study of
the most complete list ot municipal
statistics to be, found In any publica
tion In the country, namely, the llt
In the Brooklyn Kugle almanac for 1901,
one is forced to admit, whether ha
likes to or not, that Seranton is In nil
M'obublllty one of the two or three
most cheaply tun cities of any size In
