a similar advance. In lvrj, after i ferlc of

These ronlraela extended for een jears and

had been nude to peeure the promise of their re

The contract! upon nhlcli thl new road was

Tlie existing nnthraiite companies opposed this

Oxford Miners Still Out.
Thus lar nothing; has been done to
orfect a settlement between the opcra
toifl unil i-mployps of the Oxford col
liery. It seems that tho operators are
waltlni; l'or the men to present their
Ki'levnnces In tangible form, so that
they can learn whcie they are at, while
the employes tire waiting for some fa
orable proposition from the company.
A meeting of the Oxford local inn
held in Jones' hall, on Jackson streel,
last nlRht, which xvas attended by a
large number of the strikers, but noth
ing definite xvns decided upon except
to remain away from tho mines until
a settlement Is effected.
The operators contend that the men
have no grievance and that they are
wilting to accede to anything that is
reasonable, while the men argue that
they are not receiving the full scale
of wages paid at other collieries.

The Anthracite Mavket.
Tho January letter of the Anthracite
Coal Operators' association says about
the market:
The anthracite m.xihcl lias been extremely ac
tive, both as regards shipments from the mines
und the movement ot coal to the consumers' cel
lars. Thus far there has been no surplus which
llin transporting companies could place in their
icscrve stocks and, as a consequence, dclav may
be anticipated in deliveries when, during a
period of cold xveather, there i sn unusual lush
of eider.
'Hie mines are woiklng us nearly full time as
poss.ble, and the pioduction in November and
December is practically tho maximum which can
be reached xvlth the present supply of labor and
the facilities for transportation.
Trices nic being linnly maintained at all
poliiu, both tide and interior. No reduction is
anticipated until tho Umnnca ot a circular of
spring prices, and what change there will then
be, it any, is uncertain.
Taken as a whole, the market Is In sn excep
tionally strong condition, which appears to be
bated upon a permanent foundation.
