they cost but a few cents per pound. Not only
will they spoil the cake, out alum is a corro

This and That.
J. W. Martin, chief clerk to Mnster
Car Builder Oanfleld, was presented
with a handsome French briar pipe
yesterday as a Christmas gift.
K. K. Loomis, superintendent of the
Delaware, Lackawanna and Western
coal department, will be out of the city
todayenjoylng the holiday with friends.
Instructlona were sent out by the
officials of the mine workers yesterday
calling upon their members to aid In
the support of the street ear men's
strike.
Up to date 8."0 men have been exam
ined by the eye and ear specialists em
ployed by the Lackawanna company In
testing the fitness of the company's
employes.
(ieorge W. Tudor was yesterday ap
pointed assistant yardmaster in charge
of the east end of the Seranton yard
at night. Train and englnemen will
obey his instructions.
The passenger traffic yesterday on
the Lackawanna and Delaware and
Hudson railroads was the largest ever
handled In the history of either com

business of the steam roads.
All of the Delaware, Lackawanna
and Western collleiles and shops will
be closed today in observance of the
day. The clerical forces in the depart
ment offices will also have a holiday.
A noticeable feature of the ship
ments by the express companies dur
ing the paBt few days was the large
number of well-filled baskets sent to
soldier boys in the service of Uncle
Sam.
The east-bound main track on the
Lackawanna railroad at Maplewood
has been abandoned, and trains will
now be run on the new connection.
Speed will be reduced to twelve miles
an hour.
Miners at the West Ridge colliery
claim the company has cut off the
twenty-live cents yardage allowed be
fore the strike and a, committee has
been appointed to ask that the yardage
be restored.
The limited yard space in this city is
I a severe handicap to the Lackawanna
transportation department in handling
the large amount ,of business In the
coal .and freight shipments. The busi
ness along this line during the past
month Is the largest bandied in the
history of the company.
A strike of 2.10 girls employed In the
mill of the Wyoming Valley Lace com
pany is now on. The trouble is due to
tho refusal of the; officials to reinstate
a number of .operatives who quit sev
eral months ago because the mannge-

meat declined to algn n certain, scale
of wages.
The rolling stock of the LncknWnnna
railroad will bo materially hicrcasod
during the next fow mouths in prep
aration for the Increased amount of
business which will come to them for
the Buffalo exposition, Several large
contracts will soon be let for new
equipment In the passenger depart
ment. Tho fire at the Delaware, Pino
IMdgo nnd Laurel Ittiti mines, near
Miner's Mills, Is still raging with not
much Impression being made upon It
by the couple of hundred men engaircd
In righting It. The gas nnd 1're damp
prevent the men from getting near
enough to make their work effective.
Tho belief Is gaining strength that tho
area covered by the lire will have to
be senlcd and flooded.
