the year. Interest at present is cen

piescnt Indications, buyers may have
to pay a price which will prevent any
competition with the larp-e companies
even more effectually than in 1900.

This and That.
Organizer C. W. Uaxter Inst week
toured Luzerne county In the Intercuts
of the stationary engineers.
An explosion occurred recently tit the
mines of .1. W. Kllworth & Co., nt Ells
worth, near Pittsburg, and not only
set on lire the mines, but did a Rreat
ileal of damage. The workings are
now being flooded and when the
Ilames are 'extinguished, the mines
will he pumped out and operations re
sumed. The record In turning out rods was
broken at No. y rod mill of the .Toilet
plant of the llllnnU Steel company last
week. The night turn made 537,700
pound", or 240 gross tons, ot rods, and
not only gave the mill the world's
record for a single night's work, but
made the month's production of the
mill the greatest ever turned out by
any rod mill In the world. The mill
has an average for the month of l!)fj
gloss tons.
AMERICAN ENGINES.
One Reason Why They Ave Preferred
to Those of English Hake.
I'M. 111 the London lpreis.
An Kxpress r"presentatlve had an
Interview yesterday with the chairman
"I one of the best-known British loco
motive manufacture) s with a view to
gleaning how It was so many British
lallway companies had to send their
oiders for new engines to America.
Tito life of an expiess engine K It
seems, ten years, and railway com
panies have found It more and more
necessary, tra'llc Increasing so rapid
ly, to continually add to their locomo
tive stock. Most of the loading com
panies now make thelt own rolling
slock, which, If It has led, perhaps,
to more uniformity In construction,
lias not been found an adequate "way
out" of the dlfllculty. The assistance
first of pilvate British englneeilns
linns, and then of American com
panion, has had to be requisitioned.
"American engines," said the author
ity intPt legated, "do not come up to
the home-made article so far as qual
ity is concerned, but they are deliv
ered with far sieater dispatch. That
is the secret of the matter.
"American locomotives burn more
fuel, their valve motions are not near
ly so well tinlshed and the fittings nie
more hunledly put together; but they
are far cheapet even when cost of
tianspott is taken into account."
"How do the prices compare, then?"
"Passenger expiess engines made in
this country cost from 2,500 to 3.
r00, though mote powerful machines,
made by special builders, may cost
another thousand or so. Now Ameri
can contractor!!, not only turn out
their engines in less time, but at a
piiee less by 500."
The types of standard engines in
England and Ameiica are; it was ex
plained, approaching more and more
to a common allinlty, the most note
worthy distinction no v.- being in the
framework of the boiler. It is, there
fore, not a ditiicult matter for Ameri
can engineers to match British stand
ard patterns, especially when, as wis
the ease with one of the biggest liom-j
lines, the standard was waived be
cause the emergency was gteat.
"I can say with experien-e." was
the concluding lenuirk of the expert,
"that at present recourse to America
is Inevitable. Orders rush In upon us
both from home and from alnoad.
The war has robbed us of many of our
best hands, and coal Is very dear.
AVe aie unable to meet the demand.
Ameiica can, and does."
