(Veise 11). It bus been supposed that Jo-eph
was able to sceuie for moilier and ihild more
tcunfortable tUiners than tliO.se nt first obtained,
and tiadiiion lrpiesentu that the women of the
town, on hearing of tnc .advent, offered their
houses to the l.iitle Stranger. It must have
been an exciting occasion when the-o xisltoiw
fiom a far country gained admission to the
dwelling honorable men seeking a child! The
intelligence must have? hecn ra(iidly carried into
all -laits of tho village, (hawing tho people to

Oriental custom, tho wise men avon-hip tlte boy,
the future King. Then opening thcli treasuic,
biouglit piobably on tho backs of camels, they
presented their gifts, a custom in eastern coun
tries from time iinincinoii.il (Ccn. .xxwlii: E),
when Inferiois would humble themselves in tbe

WAHXKD, Wiclced men are not alwaa nf.
fercd to act their pleasute. Sometimes the
splilt of God restrains them by moving directly
upon their minds uud hearts (fix-, jtvlil: 11), At
other times that spirit prompts other men so
to act as to thwart their designs (l'ilm Lxxvi;
10), Heiod will not bo permitted to de-troy
tills boy Jesus, whoso time fer sacillielal death
is Mibciiuent to u long and noble service for
tuith (Matt. Ml: 21). The vvUo men whom
Im would employ ugalu-t Him, by a dream or
vision, a method long established (Numb. Ml;
ll), and frequently used dining the evangelical
ldvtoiy (Matt, xxvii: 10), were made awaio ot
the Mng'3 purpoe. Tho communication of this
Intelligence to their minds caused their leturn
to their own couutiy without visiting Jeima
lem again, leaving Herod to devise another
schema of moio extensive shughter, by which
he went into hlstoiy as the most eiuel and
heaitless of wen (Verses 1U-1S), This act of
tho Magi, under Divine institution, l.s a further
maik of their goodness.
