THE SCRANTON, TRIBUNE- THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1900.
I
NEWS OP THE
LABOR WORLD
fRAFFIO IS HEAVY ON THE D.,
L. & VT. RAILROAD.
Largely Due to the Groat Output of
Coal from the Mines Kingston
Coal Company Hri Agreed to Sub
mit the Matters Its Workmen
Complain of to Arbitration
Enginemen Requested to be Care
ful Not to Run to the End of
Switches Board for Today.
Tranlc of all kinds Is brisk on the
Delaware, Lackawnniui anil Western
1'itllroad linos now-n-dnyp, and on tho
Hcrnnton division pnrllcularly licnvy
Is tho tonnage of coal shipped from
thews parts. December Ih piovlng a
crnnrl mntlHla nt tlll vnl'IflllH IjOC'Ua-
wanna collieries, and they are yleldliu;
n steady nnd sure product of anthra
cite. lietween thirty nnd thlrty-nve
thousand tan dally leave the city for
tho various shipping portc. lloboken,
us the eastern point, Is every day the
destination of heavily laden taoal
trains, and Osweuo, Syracuse, nuf
fnlo and Utlrii are the cites where the
vest hound trains leave their freight.
All the Laekawnnnu mines aie now
in good ivorkliiK order, and indeed
since the end or the htrlke there has
bren barely nny Inlenuptlon In tho
operation of the company collieiies.
Differences to Be Arbitrated.
Tho Kingston Coal company has de
cided to allow the gilevances of the
IMwardsvllle miners to be adjusted
by arbitration, nnd thus terminate
the strike declared by the men, as a
issult of the company's non-com-pliarico
with several demands pre
sented. Between twelve and llftcn
bundled men, employed nt Edwnrdd
I1Ip, have been on strike since Dec.
It!, and the Kingston people have now
granted the stilkers several of the
inlnor concessions, and have agreed
that three arbitrators be chosen, to
tettle the other dilllcultlcs.
Chief among the requests granted
is the semi-monthly pay. There has
been a very general demand among
the company's minors for this, and it
will go into effect in January. The
principal questions to be arbitrated
are topping, and the case of Foreman
Thomas Morgan.
The men prefer several serious
rharges of extortion against Morgan,
whom they accuse of levying a tax
upon some of the employes and com
lHling applicants for positions to pay
him certain sum. His removal has
b'-en asked, but the company refuses
in oust him until be has been legally
(onvlcted. The company's tupping
mips differ from those of the majoiity
of the operators, the men claim, in
asmuch as eight InMead of six inches
of topping is required.
These two important matters will be
decided bv arbitration. The miners
will choohe one arbitrator, the com
pany another, nnd the third will bo
selected by lhe.se two.
For Lackawanna Enginemen.
A bulletin lias been issued to Dela
snie, Lackawanna and Western rail
uiad enginemen, regarding reports
that some enginenn.n in cliaige of the
S00 class engines pull down too close
to the ends of passing sldinss, when
waiting for passenger trains to pass,
thius leaving little cloaranc; between
the 8oa cUi.w and 1,000 class engine. in
passing. Knginemen are requested to
be cupful about this and havo thMr
engines back far enough to givu full
cleninuce.
Wilkes-Barre Trolley Men.
Xot only arc the Scranton street car
men up in arms for shorter hours and
more pay, but the conductors and mo
lormen of the Wyoming Valley Tiac
tion company also have their griev
ances, which will bo toman uw after
noon presented to the olllceis of the
company at Wilkes-Uurre.
Tho men demand practically the
same concessions as the local trolley
men. They ask that the unsatisfac
tory swing shift be done away with,
and a two-shift system be inaugur
ated, ouch of nine hours, with a com
pensation of twenty cents per hour.
President Ulgg. of tho company, is ox
p"ctod to be in Wilkes-Hurre today.
Regarding Intemperance.
Jllne loretnen throughout the ai
ycino region complain Unit since tho
inauguration of the two weeks' pay,
a number of miners are in the habit
of drinking for a dav or two after
pay and neglecting their duties. An
