MYSTERIE8 OF THE MOON.
Intevesting Observations by Prof,

Llnno bus been Klven. It Iiuh been as
fcjdtously watched for many yenrs, be
causo about 1860 hcimothliif,- occurred
which caused a wonderful cliunge In Its
ftppearance, Uoforo It looked like 11
'crater, but little elevated above tho
plain and Its throat filled with black
sjtadow. Suddenly, Instead of u crater,
'it 'appeared as a white spot. Later on
u'Uark center uhowed in tho apot, aa if
tho inisbln crater had yawned ati.tln

more tnitu thirty years liavo slnco
passed -without any alteration In tlm
aspect of Untie, sonio natiommiers
have bejjuu to quebtlon whether tho
oliserveis of a quuitor of a century aaro
did not make a mistake.
Now Prof. Pickerlinr rescues Ll nne'a
reputation as a uenuine marvel but at
the same time Incrcasea tha mystery. '
watchlnK It during the eclipse, when
the shadow of thu earth passed like a
cuolltiK cloud act cm tho face of the
moon, he found by careful measure
ments that the size of the white soot
surrounding Ijlnno Increased while
bUrled In the shadow, the amount of
the expansion in tho diameter of the
spot being about onostxth of .a mile.
As the eclipse pussfd off It bawin lo
contract attain,
Hut this In not all, .Measuremcutii
of the oulgniutloal spot made when
there was no eclipse showed that It un
dergoes a similar but much more ex
tensive fluctuation in conscnueuco of
tho variation In tho Intensity of the
sunlight railing upon it in the course
of the lunar day. A day upon tho moon
1h equal to about fourteen of our days
that Is to say, nearly two weeks elapso
between sunrise and uunsct at anv
point on the face of thiJ moon. Meas
urements of I.lnne mude two days af
ter thu sun has risen upon It give it a
diameter of nearly five miles. Measured
after it has been exposed weight days
to the unclouded sun, its diameter is
less ,thuu two miles and a half. During
the long lunar afternoon, as the sun
gradually sinks and the fleiceness of
Its heat bee-omen llttlu tempered,
I.tnne begins to Itieieube again in dia
meter, and when tho sun gets near tho
horizon the wonderful spot Is seen to
have almost legalued the magnitude
that it had Just after emerging from
the lunar night.
These changes suggest frost spread
ing in the shadow and levedlng in the
sunshine, or a cloudNalternateiy grow
ing and contracting under simitar in
lluences. The fuct discovered by Prof.
Pickering that even tho shadow of the
earth falling for a short time upon ihu
spot causes it to expand to a measur
able degrco shows how sensitive it !?
to alteration!) of temperature.
But frost or a cloud upon the moon
presupposes an atmosphere and vapors
there. They certainly must be widely
different from such things upon the
earth, but If they are abundant enough
to cause motions and changes vislblo
to our eyes, their presence may pos
sibly indicate the existence of yet more
Interesting things In the lunar world.
It should be added because the fact,
while tit present Increasing the mys
tery, may in tho end aid In solving it
that changes like those witnessed in
l.lnno do not appear 'to affect most of
the other well-known markings on the
moon, At tho time of his collide ob
servations Prof, Pickering carefully
watched three or four remarkable lo
calities on tho lunar surface, where
craters yawn or Hat plains lie extended,
but not the slightest alteration wa.i
observed In their forms or appearance
during the time that Llnno was ex
panding under the chilling effect of the
earth's shadow and then .shrinking
again as the uutuiuiored blaze of the
sun fell upon it.
Theiy Is, however, at least one other
locality on the moon wlieio curious
changes of u similar origin have been
detected the ring-shaped plain called
Plato. Thin is iiLso In the northern lu
nar hemisphere, about 600 wiles from
Unne. it Is astonishingly regular In
outline, about sixty miles in diameter,
very flat, and completely encircled with
lofty, steep and sharp-peaked moun
tains as fine a valley for n nation of
hunnltrt to inhabit as could well bo
Imagined. A few thousand Boer rifle
men stationed on the kopjej of Plato
could make it safe from Invasion
against the entire lunar world. In this
singular mountain-ringed valley It has
been noticed that thu rising sun, lost
peering above tho surrounding peak,
looks down upon a vast 'whitish grtv
expanse, lllllng the whole of tho I111.
mouse Interior, Hut as the solar i.rii
(fwlnss clear of the mountain tops and

nnil then rapidly fades over nil the
iurfaca of the valley until at lun.tr

while at the same tln-e its Inolosln

Thes'! appearances taken In connec
tion with the remarkable phenomtm 1
reported by Prof. Pickering, Indicate
that there aiu certain places on tht
moon where the contrast between day
light and darkness or between heat
ill id cold manifests peculiar effects.'
