BOME MARVELS OF PRECOCITY,
Childhood Accomplishments of Sev
eral Great Men.
Tho stories told in hiogr.iphles of the
piecoclty of inuny eminent men al
most Ntuggor heller. Yet no fuct te.
gardlng greut men Is bettor attested
than that the incuVul faculties of a
large proportion of them especially
great artists, poets and scholars were
developed early, Mozuit, ho could
write tunea when 4 years old, wua tho
despair of his Instructors, who could
teach him nothing. At tho ugu of 7
he astonished tho Parisians by his per
formance on the organ and by his Im
provisation, and published two of his
own muslca'i compositions, Schu
bert's Instructor complained that ho
was alwuys muldng the mortifying
discovery that' ho could tell his pupil
nothing which ho did not know he
forehand. Beethoven was u standing
puzzle to his professors, and chuckled
over the dllllcultles which they could
not explain by reference to any au
thoritative work on thorough buss.
Mendelsshon by his eighth year had
acquired such mastery over the piano
that ho played It with wonderful lin
Isii, and In the theory of music he had
made such progress that he had de
tected in a concerto of Bach six of
those dread offenses against the gram
mar of music, consecutive fifths. 'When
at the age of 14, he was placed uuder
Moscheles, the hitter wroto In Ids
diary: "This afternoon I gave Felix
Mendelssohn his first lesson, without
losing sight for u slngiu moment of
tho fact that I was sitting next to a
w aster, not a pup;!." At 10, tho youth
read Wieland's Shakespeare, ami, with
ul tho vigor of i ho eagle HUinur.'f In Ills
newly perfected opinions, threw off tho
Immortal overture to thu "Midsum
mer Night's Bream." When the boy,
Nlcolo Puguninl, was sent to Parma
to ttudy under Alessand.ro Uolla, tho
great musician, on hv.ii'ing him play,
told him to go homo, he could teach
him nothing. Tho result w.us tho same
when young Turner, destined to such
eminence as a painter, was Bent to
school to learn drawing. A short time
ugo the llrst prize At tho Paris Cqn
scrvatory of Muclu was won by a girl
named Rente, who wus but 10 yeais
old, and was so small that the pedals
of thu piano had to be raise 1 to nnubh
her to renen them.
Ono of tho chief combatants in the
famous ancient and modern learnlni:
1 controversy which ruged about two
centuries ugo in Knglund wus William
Wotton, D. D., who had been gradu
utud at Cambridge at thu ago of 13,
and aftorwards distinguished himself
by his attainments in Latin, a reek
and' the Oriental lauguuges. At 13
Alexander Hamilton was found com
petent to take charge of a mercantile
establishment; ut IS he wrote papers
which were attributed to several lead
ing men of tho nation; ut 20 ho was
the confidant of Washington, and at
21 he had mastered the intricate sub
ject of flnunce.
In our duy Sir William Rowan Ham
ilton, whom Wordsworth declared to
bo one of tho two most wonderful men
ho had over known (the other was
Coleridge), wus a still greater marvel
of precocity. When but 4 years and Ii
months old ho read Latin, Greek, and
Hebrew, the last with tho points; at
8 ho had ucqulred French and Italian,
and could extemporlzo In Latin a de
scription of .a landscape through which
ho walked; at 9 ho had u. fair knowl
edge of Arabic, and wus eagerly be
ginning Sanscrit. Before he hud com
pleted his 10th year ho was grounded
In tho Chuldee, Hyrlae, Hindustani,
Malay, Mnhrntl, Bengali and other
languages, and was about to begin tho
Chinese. To have acquired even a
smattering of all those tongues would
have been extraordinary enough; but
that his knowledge was very much
more than a smattering has been
shown,
Queer Conceit.
1'rom tho WtUbuig Chronicle Tclctjrapli.
"Snaggs liu a queer idea o( college life,"
catil ono uuhmlty man to another.
"Sol"
"Vvs; he laid yesterday, ";hen I told hiiu to
get ready (or the cauo rueli, that ho came to
ktudy and not to mix up in riots."
AIRING THEIR PREFERENCES.
'Hires maidena titlked, as maideni will,
Of uhat idtei life its zeit,
SjUI one, a biuom country girl,
"Tho mountain air is best."
A-
Tho second, clad In jaelitlne suit
All wliilo beyond compare,
Did thereupon exulting cry;
'(ihes mo thf cccn all!''
r
'1 hen on iu nuliiglng himmojk pond
Half optd her ejea dhino
And languorouity laid, "111 tako
