THE HEEBEBT CASE.
The condition of Edward Herbert,
who was stabbed Sunday night and
operated on Tuesday night, was so
serious yesterday morning that Alder
man Jones and a stenographer took his
ante-mortem statement, which will be
used in the prosecution of his assail

The members of the St. Aloysius so
ciety held their first smoker in their
new quarters over J. II. "Wheeler's
store, on Main street, hibt evening. The
rooms have been newly painted and
papered and present a most attractive
and inviting appearance. It is (safe to
predict that they will be well patron
ized during the coming winter months,
and the members of tte society are to
be congiatulated on securing such an
excellent suite of rooms, which, be
sides a meeting hall of considerable
size, contnlns a reading and smoking
room and another for numerous games
and pastimes.

was in town yesterday.
The funeral of John Carroll was
held yesterday morning from his lute
home on Winola avenue at 10:;lo
o'clock. Long before the hour set for
the funeral the house was tilled with
the mounting friends and relatives of
the deceased. At 10:45 o'clock lhe
funeral cortege slowly moved to the
cathedral, where a solemn high mass
of requiem was celebrated by Father
Feeley. During the mass the church
choir beautifully chanted funeral an
thems. Interment was made In the
Hyde Park Catholic comtory. The pall
