2 THE SUK ANTON TRIBUNE-THUKSDAYr, SEJL'TJtiAUSElt 0, 1900. TRIBUNE'S EDUCATIONAL CONTEST Many Contestants Make Material Gain. HOW THE LEADERS STAND David V. Blrtley Gains n Few Points on Charles Rodriguez All Are Working Hard One of the Rules Which Has Been Misunderstood Is Fully Explained The Contestants' Opportunity. There nie Just twentyfour more working dnjs bofoto the close of The Tribune's Educational Contest, and the contestants are beginning to realize this utid ate working earnestly. Yes terday's letuins only lacked two points of those of the piecedlng day, which was the largest on iccord, yet there Is no change In the order of the con testants. Yesterday David V. Blrtley was 03 points behind Charles Uodtl Kiuz, while this morning he Is but S3 hi low. Arthur Kemtnerer pained 2 on Oliver Callahan and Ilany Reese, Ml&s r.inny H. Williams and Miss Grace Slim ell all moved up closer, to Eugene Roland. Richard Roberts, who occu pies eleventh position, gained a few points, bringing him near to tenth place. Occasionally questions arise which are not quite clear to some of the contestants. One of these is in tegard to the rule which reads: "Only new subscribers will be counted. Renew als by persons already on our sub set iptlon lUt will not be credited." The reason for making this rule Is very plain. The Tribune's object in con ducting the contest is to secure new Mibscrlbers and thus inciease its cir culation. This object would not be accomplished by accepting renewals of present subscriptions as these, with ery few exceptions, are renewed -voluntarily. Now, as to the application of the rule. Any person who is now receiving The Tribune, whetluer he pays by the month or year, is a sub scriber, and it is all such subscrip tions, when continued by payment to a contestant, that are not accepted. Any person who purchases The Tilbune each day or occasionally is not a subscriber and all such are accept able under the rules of the contest. One ruling which has proved a little confusing to one or two is the accept ance of renewals of subscriptions so cured by the contestants. The Trib une consideis that when a contestant secures a new subscriber for one month that contestant is fairly entltlpd to a renewal of that subscription for any length of time that the new subscriber can bo persuaded to pay In advance, pioviding the renewal Is secured before the con test closes. In many Instances, when a subscriber has received The Tribune for one month, he will be willing to renew for three months or a yeai. This Is the contestants' opportunity. -f -- -f"t- landing of the Ten -f Leading Contestants: Charles Rodriguez, 428 -f Webster ave., Scran- ton 220 2. Dnvid V. C A most singular accident occurred hero Tuesday morn ing, the tesult of which it is feared will prove fatal. Hev. Mrs. Homans, xvho had been spending the night with a sick friend was returning homo nt about F a. m., wljen the stone walk over which she was pas.slng suddenly gave way, caus ing her to drop seeral feet into the water channel beneath, which extends the whole length of Main street, under the walks. The stone wteN 9 feet by 5 feet and ftom four to six inches In thickness, and as the two pieces fell Into tho channel bhe was pinioned be tween them in such a manner that her head was badly cut and bruised, and It is feared she may have sus tained serious Internal injuries as well. Two men who were on the street and heard the crash hurried to the rescue, but were unable to jemovo tho stones until other help arrived. The cause of the accident was due to the fact that the stone was not the lino Itagglng generally used about here, but was of a red shell nature, and had probably become partially disintegrated and then cracked almost by Its own weight.
