the opening of the High school In thli
city yesteiday. Professor Uryelen was
on hand to carry out liH contiact, and
Professor lusher was present to act
as principal In accot dance with his

out Interruption, while the former said
he was sony he couldn't frrant the re
quest, but as lie was under contract to
act as principal he would have to pro
ceed with the work.

Shafer, of Scranton, captured t'n
honors in tlio contest for the Carbon
dale cup at the Labor day tennis tour
nament. Rutherford beat Kus In the
preliminary round, C-3, C-3, and won
out from Morss In the first, 6-4, 1-G,
10-8.
Aitkrjn won from Lathrope, C-5, 0-1.
Rutherford won from Altken, 6-4, 4-c,
C-2.
C. Shafer won from Swlgeit, 6-1, 6-0.
Crane won from E. Shafer, 6-2, 6-3.
C. Shafer won from Crane, 6-1, 0-3
C. Shafer won from Rutherford, 6-0,
C-0.
The cup still remains the property of
the Carbondale Tennis club, a contest
ant being required to take honors
twice before It is given into his pos
session. Next Labor day Shafer will
have an opportunity to win the cup.

Rev. D. L. Davis, formerly pastor of
the Congregational church, this city,
now of "Wllllamstown, Pa., was taken
suddenly ill while calling at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. GilfTlth Morgan, of
Tcirace street, yesterday. He intend
ed to preach at the Congregational
church last night, but was unable to
do so. Ho showed symptoms of epi
lepsy, but as no history of such trouble
was obtainable the attending physi
cian said it might possibly be less
serious.

an operation at Dr. Wheeler's private

from Elk lake.
James Johns, of Vandllng, while
running on tho sllppeiy pavement of
Salem avenue, Monday evening, fell,
Injured his hip and head and was ten
dered unconscious. He was taken to
Dr. Wheeler's hospital, and was able
to return home yesterday.
Miss Ray Gillespie, who has spent
five weeks with her aunt, Mrs. C. V.
Rose, will return to her home in New
York today.

OLYPHANT.
The Scranton Railway company has
a force of men employed on Lacka
wanna and Delaware streets, remov Ing
the poles and tracks. This section of
the road has been abandoned for a
number of years on account of the
Inability of the Railway company to
cross the tracks of the Delaware and
Hudson company. For a time, one car
did service on this portion of tho
line, but for lack of patronage it was
taken off.
Mlsa Rachel Evans has accepted a
position with the Lackawanna Silk
company.
Mr. and Mrs. H, B. Matthevvson are
in Norwich, N. Y.
The Eejdy Creek colliery of the Dela
ware nnd Hudson company resumed
operations yesterday, nfter an idle
ness of several months. Extensive re
pairs have been made at the colliery
and a larger output of coal will be
hipped than heretofore.

at West Scranton yesterday.
Prof. T. W. Wntklns attended the
eisteddfod at Scranton Monday,
