T. n. Howe, freight agent for the
I.ncknwanna railroad at Green Rldse,
and C. K. AVetmore, an employe of the
Green Jtlilse Lumber company, liav
boen granted a patent on an appar
atus for forming glass or vitreous pipe
or tubular bodies, which will be us.d
In the manufacture of glass tile, pipes,
or conduits.
Tho Invention relates to improve
ments In apparatus designed for form
lng pipe from vitreous materials and
especially such as are made plastic fcv
heat clm-p, for instance and it Ins
for Its object to provide an apparatus
which will form perfect pipe, cylin
drical In cross-section. If so desired,
and with a minimum of labor and at
tendance. The Invention consists, primarily, In
a rotary mold or succosblnn of such
molds, each arranged vertically and
adapted for the reception of the molt
en or plastic material from a station
ary feed, wheieby the mass Is dis
tributed Jn the most perfect manner
to secure homogeneity, and In pro
viding. In connection with such molds,
a Inngltudlnally-movable cone, to
gether with a similarly movable for
mer for shaping the edge of the pipe.
Mr. 'NYtmore is the originator of the
apparatus, and has a contract with
Mr, Howe for placing his Invention on
the market. When seen by a Tribune
man yesterday he stated that at pres
ent he does not know whether or not
a stock company will be formed, but
In all probability a plant will soon be
established for manufactuilng this
wondeiful commodity, which will vir
tually supplant the present sower, gas,
water and other pipe matetlals.
His Invention differs from the Honta
product of glass pipe in so far as It is
more perfect In Its construction, and
in the opinion of men who are expertu
along that line, It Is bound to come
into general use. There is a possibil
ity of the patentees selllnc their In
vention, but at all events It will soon
bo placed on the market.
This and That.
Division Superintendent Clarke, of
tho Lackawanna rail: end, has notified
the conductors and engineers under
him that ho will bo pleased to make
their personal acquaintance and has
Invited them to call on him at his
ofllce any time, whether they want
anything or not.
The otneials of the Lehigh Valley
Coal company have about made up
their minds to abandon the subter
ranean diagonal slope at the Trlmiose
colliery at Mahanoy City. This Is the
slope In which the mine fire Is raging
at present. The abandonment of tho
slope will necessitate the botlng of a
400 foot hole. It is expected that a
portion of the mine will be In readi
ness for operation early this week.
No. 503, the llfth of the orde- of
eighteen engines now being built by
the Dickson Manufacturing company
at tho Cliff works for the St. Louis
and San Francisco Railroad company,
was turned out of the shops yesterday
and prepaiod for shipment. Traveling
Engineer Eugeno Call will probably
accompany the locomotive to Its destination.
On the whole, the annual report of
the Erie Is a very satisfactory docu
ment. Doth gross and net earnings
show handsome gains, nnd final result
of operations for the year which ended
June 30, was a surplus of Jl.063,430,
compared with $c:3,7'JS in 1S99, $033,916
In 1S9S nnd with $332,01S in 1S97. It will
thus be seen that the road Is gradually
strengthening its financial position.
The threats of a stilko made by the
mlneis' union has caused some fear
In the New England states, and the
trade there Is quite brisk. Most of the
dealers in that section of the country
have little coal on hand, and they
have begun to lay In their winter sup
ply. There Is a disposition to charge
full tariff prices, which has not been
the case In Roston for some time.
Dining the past week there has been
a better demand for nnthraclte coal In
this city and at tidewater points, says
the Philadelphia 1'iess. This has
caused a better feeling In the trade,

3,000 Yards at Half
Too late? Perhaps they are for this season's use. But it
will be the part of wisdom to share in this offering and hold
for future use. There's never a radical change in patterns, you
know, and next season's will differ but little from these. Cer
tainly, they'll be no prettier. There are just 3,000 yards in
this lot that we are willing to part with at half their usual
prices divided into three groups.
