Anything to de feat the corporation sewer is the cry. The company has torn up a long stretch of the Lackawnnna street pave and nre evidently bent on reach ing the "Hats" first. A special meet ing of the council was held on Tues day night to consider matters rela tive to the sewer; whether the borough had not the right to appoint their own Inspector to see that the work was done properly and that the streets were left In proper condition. Mr. A'an Sickle said that be had consulted the borough attorney on the question, who stated that while the company had every legal right to occupy the streets they were bound to leave them In as good condition as they found them nnd could be held accountable for any damage that may occur In coming In contact with the borough's own sewer. Mr. Mnck then responded thnt the workmen In excavating near the Inter section of Lloyds court had broken one of the borough pipes. Mr. Reap then moved that a committee be ap pointed to confer with the attorney as to the mode of proceedure agnlnst the Sower Dralnnge company for the damage sustained. Me.urs. Reap and Gillespie were nam?d. The chairman was empowered to employ a com petent inspector to look nfter the bor ough's interest in the construction of the system. A committee of tax-payers from tho "flats" were present and wanted coun cil to give them permission to con nect a private sewer in that section of the town to the borough's system. The members of the council were will ing to grnnt the request, but thought tho better way to get about It would be for them to bring In a petition nnd then pnss nn ordinance making their sewer an extension of the First sewer district of the borough. A com mittee of two were appointed to draw up nn ordinance for this purpose and have It ready for Monday night's meeting. Mlsess Henrietta nnd Louise Stone left yesterday for a trip up tho Hud son. Ths prices which rule In the mar kets for mushrooms at the present time prove conclusively that thcy form a very profitable crop. There are several ways of raising them. They can bo grown In the open, under frames, and In hot-houses, but which ever method be utilized, the crop will be found to be one of the most prollt nblo that can bo raised for market purposes. It matters little what sys tem bo udopted to raise them so long as the work Is done well, but It Is ab solutely necessary, when they have been grown, that they be put up In porper form, for If they nro badly parked they will give poor results nt best. We are dealing with a dainty product, with one which requires care In handling, for tho mushrooms should be unbroken and In fresh con dition when they are brought under the notice of buyers. When we argue thus, we are not Intending to lead up to the suggestion that they should only be put up In punnets, though that Is the best package for the best stuff. If they nre well grown and In good condition, they can be put Into half bushels or strikes, nnd, If In the for mer particularly, they will Fell well, but certainly they always make tlvi best prices when they have been packed In shallow punnets. Provlde'd n given space Is covered over with n. span-shaped and hatched roof, mushrooms can bo grown to per fection nnd with much better effect than they can In tho open. We nro qulto nwnre that this point has been debated ngnln and ngnln by some writers, but there nre risks when the crop Is grown in the open which must be considered; and, considering these and other things, too, wo havo de tided that the shed Is the best for mushroom cultivation. With a sunken bed and a path down the center un der the ridge of the roof, one nuiv very cheaply secure a fine place for the purpose. We think the sunk bed best, because It tends to economize or conserve the heat, and thnt Is an Item. Further, the thatched roof secures mi even temperature, nnd nn even tem perature Is a potent factor with this crop. We havo seen heavy crops grown In tho houses we refer to a shed about 100 feet In length by 25 feet wide yielding about 2,000 pounds of the llnest mushrooms ever marketed for six months' work. Not a bad re sult by nny means. If tho value Is put nt Od a pound, tho result will ho ox cellent, and on two crops a year the profitable nature of the business Is ap parent. It must not be forgotten tint veptllators nre of absolute necessity. Too ninny growers do not consider the Importance of these, nnd fall In consequence, or'only obtain a grently reduced crop from tho beds. In fall ing to recognlzo tho Importance of ventilation many growers Imagine that the quality of the Indoor mush rooms cannot be bo good ns that of thoso grown In tho open. Neither can It bo when the houses havo no provis ion made for ventilation. Exchange. SITUATIONS WANTED ttTtiioNMVANri:ii-nvT7imb to do oks- eral housework or dining room work or wash Ing and Ironing.
