Thro Is fiomo reason for calling the

though the movement of coal Is good
nnd the tjuuntity taken by consumers
Is fully tin to, or rather above, that
usual tit this season. This Is especially
tho cams with the steam slzts. Other
wise the trade condition docs not dif

A Ktntoment which f-eems pretty
well supported, though olllcnr.s of the

for tho llrst half or tho year at 2.',
471,r.'.';! tens; which in 1.773,401 tons
more thnn last year. The market
norms to have iibsoibul this excess
fairly well, for we do not hear of
oxcesslvu atockn anywhere, and the
tnlk of restricting July production has
not resulted In any definite action.
Some of the companies, however, are

show that coal Is b-lng bought more

Improvements at Avoca.
The Improvements that are being
made on tho Erie and Wyoming Val
ley yaids at Avoca are rapldy pro
gressing and people who visited that
section n few weeks ngo would not
recognize tint legion, so rapidly have
hills, hollows, shrubbery and trees
been icmoved. In their places are to
be seen dynamos, water tanks, eleva
tois and temporary trncks,
I.athrop k. Shay of Connecticut are
the contractors, but the woik Is sup
ervised by C'ontiactor Kugene llo
l.e '"hlln of New York, fleorge Mc
flngor is financial overseer and Mr.
Molht of Dunmore inspects the work
in the Interest of the Erie and Wy
oming company. About 4,000 feet of
tre.stllng in many parts considerably
elevnted Is being built. The tilling In
of the huge depiesslons Is perhaps the
most Interesting pait of the work and
attracts hundreds of visitors every
day. Huge banks of earth rapidly dis
appear by means of Icrnhart's steam
shovel, which removes about 2.oeo
cubic yards of earth dally. One cul
vert, almost 400 feet in length, built of
red stone from the White Haven quar
ries, H almost completed, and is not
only substantial, but ornamental, uin
nlng, ns It does, through a deep ravine
and undermining the Hack. Two oth
er culverts will nlse be built.
Nature. veins to have fitted tho le
gion for the work that Is being done
and the conti actors sny tho woik will
piobably be completed about Decem
ber 1. In stead of March, as originally
calculated. A night force will be put
on In a few weeks and another loco,
motu-e and cars will probably arrive
li re next week. Tin present woik
gives to Avoc.i many itinerants.
This and That.
The Atchison is spending over $2,
r.00,00 for the acquisition of branch
lines.
The Pennsylvania company hns or
dered seveial new cars from the Pull
man shops.
The Allegheny Valley has ordered
two engines from the llaldwln Loco
motive works.
11 Is nnnounced that the Atchison,
Topeka nnd Sante Pe will order twen
ty new locomotives nt an early date.
The Delaware, Lackawanna and
Western has ordered 1,000 coal cars
fiom the American Car and Foundry
company.
The master bricklayers of the city
voluntarily Increased the wages of
their men on Saturday from 35 to 10
cents an hour.
About a dozen employes of the Lack
awanna Iron nnd Stel company left
Saturday night to as.slsl In the work
of electing the company's new plant.
Grunt efforts were made last week
to get the new phalr factory at Hall-
stead eady for operation this morning.
and while all the mnchlnery has not
yet arilved, there Is enough to begin
woik with. Tho building Is located
near tlu Hallstcad station nnd will
probably provide woik for 700 hands.
A movement Is on foot to organize
a local company of the Susquehanna
Valley Telephone company of Pennsyl
vania in this place, where n central
ollleo will be established, If sulllclent
stock In the enterpilse !s taken. Stock
In the line, which Is Intended for tho
convenience of citizens generally, will
bo disposed of nt a price sulllclent
only to cover tho cost of telephones,
operation and repairs.
Tho Erie road Is being grently Im
proved under tho present ninnagement.
Take the vicinity of Deposit, for ox
nmple. The new block signal tower,
the largest on the load, having seven
teen levers, is one great improvement,
all the HWltches being operntod from
the tower. The two water tanks havo
been repalicd and painted, the depot
lias also been painted, the old, un
sightly roundhouse has been torn down
and now a large force of men are put
ting In gravel ballast, now ties and In
ninny places new rails were laid only
a short time ago. D'iioslt Courier.
The t'ftnernl fall In prices In Iron
continues nnd buyers are still holding
off fo far as time contract!- are con
cerned and purchaslm; i nly for Immed
iate needs. At the same time tho sit
uation is no worse; In fact, It Is bo
conilng apparent that there Is a great
deal of business to be done, when peo
ple are convinced that prices will go
no lower. The strui tural steel makers
met In New Voik on WedneFday nnd
decided to make no change in prices.
The recent reduction has brought out
a good many or;lers and thero seems
to bo no need for a further drop. Tin
Htiutturiil business Is, In fact, In much
better condition than any other section
of th'j market.

What was Intended to be ''a large

ratify the Kansas City nominations
and plntfoim. was held at tho Or

paper of the opposltloi would hae

for a lot of fun.
U was billed broadcas-t during the
week that Hon. William Snlzer, the
ex-vlc piesidc-ntial possibility; Hon.
Thomas F. Grady, one of Tammany's
leading orators, and Hon. T. J. Sulli

disappointed the committee, and when
the as-emblagi at th" grounds P-ained
that they were in lor a performance
with undei studies In the leading roles,
they, too, expressed disappointment,
mainly by refusing to enthuse at the
pic-ented enthusiastic times.
NOT COMMITTEE'S FAULT
It was no fault of the committee,
though, that the stars failed to ap
pear. They were engaged by the
Lacakwann.i delegation at Kansas
city, and only last Friday C. G. lio
land in a telephons communication
with Tammany headquai ters received
assuiances that they would be on
hand. Mr. Eoland went to New York
to escort the big chiefs hither and
then learned for the first time that
they ,vould not come. The Tammany
malingers ngreed to get him ".some
thing Just as good," however, and
Mr. liolinl at noon found himself con
veying Scrantonward Max Goldberger,
Matthias Nichols and Ira Itaeder,
tin ce leading young Tammanyltes
fiom a wigwam down In the whole
sale clothing district, who had nothing
particular arrang"d for their half hol
iday. Mr. Kaeder pot lost in the
ciowd coming across the ferrv and
was left. Ah to the other two some
doubt was at (list expiesse-d as to
their being ' something Just as good,"
ns the trio of topllneis originally
billed. After the meeting, however,
the doubt no longer existed.

ANOTHER CHANCE FOR LUTZ.
Pittston Wife Murderer Granted a
New Trinl.
John Lulz, the Pittston wife-murderer,
w ho was convicted of first de
greu murder Mny 17 last, after the
Jury had been out fifteen days, was
granted a m w trial by Judge Hulsey,
at Wilki'8-ltarro, Saturday.
The possibility that the obstinate
Juror, F. A. 11. Koons, of Huntington
Mills, who held out so tenaciously
against the other eleven, had come to
a concurrence only or mainly through
physical exhaustion, led Judge Halsey
to grant tho new trial.
Koons, It will bo remembered, would
not ngreo to a first degree verdict be
cause ho bolloved Lutz wna Insane
when he committed tho deed. When
tho written verdict had been rendered
and tho Jury was being polled, Koons
said: "I signed tho verdict against
my consent, believing that tho man
was Irresponsible when he" Judge
Halsey cut him off here and bade him

These c-lrruinstHneos, coupled with
the fact that every reasonable doubt

case, prompted Judge Halsey to have
the case re. tried.

It Is understood that a strong senti
ment In faor of the movement has
lately been manifested In Christian
Endeavor circles and the executive
committee will undoubtedly be in
structed at tonight's meeting to take
the matter up and endeavor to secure
the passage of the curfew ordinance
by councils.
These curfew ordinances have been
ndopted by a number of small cities In
the west, but all attempts to pass
them In cities of any size have been
fruitless. Nine o'clock Is the time limit
generally fixed, beyond which children
under a certain age, genernlly 11
years, will not be allowed on tho
streets unless accompanied by their
parents or some older person.
The enforcement of the provisions
of the ordinance would, of course, fall
upon the policemen, who would be
obliged to arrest all children found
after 0 o'clock.
