LIVE NEWS OF THE
INDUSTRIAL WORLD
SERIOUS CONDITION OF AFFAIRS
ON THE CENTRAL.
Employes Said to Be Preparing for a
General Tie-up Test of the New
Steel Coal Car, Which Has Been
Purchased by the D., 1,. & W. Com
pany Remarkable Run Made on
tho Erie Road Recently Order to
Central Trainmen Which. Has Just
Been Issued.
Tlio following dispatch from Mnuch
Chunk wns sent out by tho Associated
Prtss last night:
"Conditions have developed nmonpr
tho employes of thu Central Railroad
of Mew Jeisey which, It Is said, threa
tens it strike on the entire system.
The lailroad brotherhoods have polled
the employes fiom Jersey City to
Scranton, and. It Is raid, nearly all tho
men favor a gcnei-il tie up of the
lines. The Fodei.iii-el Urothei hoods
held a laiKely attended meetlnR hero
yesterday and a member of the rcii
ial grievance committee said it would
lot be over two weeks befoie the en
ire system would bo tied up. lie says
here are many Kilevances, among
.hem being tho extension of the tide
water iuns from Hawks station in
stead of Coalport and tho reduction
of crews on coal nnd freight trains.
"The crews fiomcrlv consisted of a
conductor, bend and middle brakeman
and flagman. Uy a recent order the
middle brakeman Is dispensed with,
and, while not discharged, only three
men are allowed to a crew, the time
being divided among tho brakemen so
that each gets but three-quarters of
the running time."
Coal Car's First Trial.
The steel coal car recently received
at tho Delaware, Lackawanna anu
Western yard, and of which mention
has already been made in this column,
was given Its ilrst trial Sunday and
its piactical value tested. It was taken
down the Uloom division of the Lacka
wanna and was put Into service at the
Avondale, Pettebone, Woodward and
other mines. In stiength and power it
surpasses the cais used at present, of
course, and In geneial utility seems a
great impiovoment. The steel doors In
Its bottom and its chute sides give it
a gieat advantnge over the cars now
used in dumping tho coal, and it is
likely that in time these new convey
ances will entirely displace the old
ones. The car will be taken to several
mole of the Delaware, Lackawanna
and Western mines and make the en
tire round, being used at each of tho
vailous collieries.
A Remarkable Run.
One of the most remarkable runs of
a passenger tialn on tho Delaware
division of the Kile was made by train
No. G last Tuesday night. Tho engine
was No. 330, Chailes Snyder, engineer;
Thomas J. Duffy, conductor. Tho en
gine had been supplied with a big tank
holding 6,000 gallons of water. The mn
was made between Port Jervis and
Susquehanna, a distance of 105 miles,
without stopping for water.
When the train neaied the Deposit
Summit the engineer whistled for the
pusher, which jan out of the switch
up the hill, nnd train No. 0 gradually
slowed up, yet not stopping, coupled
on to the pusher, both engines being
supplied with Jenny draw heads, nnd
tho train was pulled up tho hill with
out loss of time. This is the ilrst time
in the history of the Krle that nny
passenger train has made a continuous
run between tho two points mentioned
above without stopping nt Cnlllcoon or
Hancock for water. Klmlra AdveUUer.

THE MARKETS.
Wnll Street Review.
New York, July 9. Not much im
pression was produced on the stock
market today by events nnd the pro
fessional contingent which conducted
practically all the transactions fell
again to very small proportions. Tho
larger volume of dealings nnd the
more important transactions which
chnracteilzed last week's market were
not In evidence today. Nevertheless
the price movements of tho day were
ciulte wide, owing to the small lloating
supply of stock. Tho undertone of the
inniket, too, was unmlstnkably firm.
Keven the sharp break In llrooklyn
Tianslt, which stock led the market
in point of activity, had very slight
effect on tho genernl list, although a
