Section 1 He it ordained by the select and
common councils ot the City of Carbondale, and
It is hereby ordained by the authority of the
same, that for the purpose of paving for the
erection and construction of a public intinicipil
water plant, to be owned by the slid City ol
Carlondalc, together with the purchase of land
and such water rights as may be necessity, an
increase in the Indebtedness of slid city by nn
issue of city bonds to an amount not to exceed
the sum of ?II5,01 is hereby authorized, sub.

provided.
Section 2. The question of assenting to the

shall be submitted to a vote of the qualified
electors of the Cily cf Carbondale at the next
general election occurring not less than foity
el.iv s after the passage of this ordinance.
Section 3. After the pissage of this ordlninee,
and at lease thirty lavs before said election, the
mayor shall publish a notice of the election
hereby authorized In at least two dally news
papers published in said city, and a statement
such as is required by law, which statement
shall be furnished by the city controller.
Section 4. If said electors agree to Increase
the Indebtedness of slid city for said purposis,
there shall be appropriated and set apart for the
payment of said improvement the sum of $115,000,
the estimated cost of said Improvement.
DEATH OF A. BERRY.
Late Sunday night the life of Alrlc Ilerry, of
Terrace street, came to an end. The cause of
death wax malignant Intestinal trouble with
which he had suffered several months. Ho was
born In Greenfield sixty-live years ago. During
his youth be spent four years on the sea and
saw much of the world. In IV) he entered the
Olyphant business field anil thirteen jears ago
he came to Carbondale and opened a furniture
store on Sou.h Main street. Ills business out
grew the quarters and two jean, ago lie luov.d
to the remodeled Dennis building on North
Main street, one of the handsomest in the city.
Deceased belonged to the 01 pliant Methodist
church. He devoted his time entirely to his busi
ness and home. Surviving arc a wife and four
sons, I). L. Ilerry, ot Olyphant; (leorge and
Trcd, of this city, anil Henry, of Southern Pines,
N. C. Three sisters also survive. Thev nre:
Miss Jane Ilerry and Mrs. riioilic Irwin, of this
city, and Mrs. Susan Kelly, of Scranton. The
funeral will be held at 1 o'clock Wednesday.
Interment will be made in the Pcckvlllo ceme
tery. CHILDREN COMING FRIDAY.

The many friends of Alvarle Herry at this pliee
were pa'i eel to hear of his ileath, which oeeurreel
at his homo in I'arbondile Surday evening. Mr,
Ilerry came to this place fiom Curbomlale In
I'-f.O, and was enga.-ed in the furniture and un
del taking bu-iness on the west side until about
soven vcars ago, when he returned to Carbon
e'alc. Mr. Herry was formerly a sailor. Ills
father was a captain in the war of 1M2. Cyuu
lleiry, bis giandfathcr, was a surgeon In the
revolution, and his great grandfather was killed
in the Trench and Indian war. He sides his wife
he Is survived by four sons, George and Pied
crick, of Carbondale; Henry, of Soulli Caiollna,
and D. L. Ilerry, of this plaee.
Word has been lecelved at this place of the
death of Michael Lvnch at Hlehmond, Va. De
ceased hat resided in the south for the past
light jears He Is survived lij his mother,

little villages which is considered by many to
be of little Importance, ami yet the village
supports two dry goods store's, two hardware
stoics, one crockery, two blacksmith nnd two
carriage shops, a harness shop, barlwr shop, two
dressmakers, two milliners, two physicians, one
undertaker, milk station, hotel, postotliee, a
Kernel band, photograph gallery, two meat mar
kets, one Odd Fellows' lodge and lodge of Ho
bekahs. S. 1). Thomas is very 111, having been con
fined to tho house for a time, and growing
weaker each day. Mr. Thomas Is one of our
most popular citizens and his Illness is resret
ted by many neighbors.
Mrs. Amanda Seott has been confined to her
bed for nearly two months, owing to a fracture.
Now there seems to be improvement of a per
manent chaiaeter, and her friends cherish the
hope that ere long she will be on her feet again.
Landlord Hodnej is cutting the meadow con
lweted with the hotel, Into building lots, and
will put a street through the eenteT, making
some very desirable properties. Some of the lots
are already sold.
Tho ball game that was to have been played
by Dimock vs. Hast Lemon failed to materialise.
The rains had made the grounds very unhealthy
for the players.

across the back of the left hand July 1. In
trying to raise a car window his hanel slipped
anil went through the glass. One large cord was
severed, and the result will probably be a still
finger.

.Mr. C. II. Seott, of Lawrence, Kansas, Is here,
looking up relatives, and is a pleasant and in
teresting visitor at the home of his uncle, John
Taylor. Mr. Scott was a member of the famous
Twentieth Kansas regiment, that did such no
ble work and hard fighting in the Philippines,
He was wounded in the arm, which was badly
shattered by a Filipino bullet, and as a me
mento of the battle In which he was wounded,
bo exhibits a piece of bone taken from his
arm, which he has mounted with cold.
