The hard coal trade shows no activ
ity worth particular mention. The
movement of coal up tho lakes Is not
heavy, and tho demand from points east
of Cape Cod shows no new develop
ment. This Is, Indeed, the dull season
and there Is small chance of any In
crease In demand before July at tho
earliest.
In Chicago territory trado la pretty
quiet, though thcro Is reported to be a
little moro life to tho market. At tho
head of tho lakes there Is but little
doing. At Buffalo and at nil eastern
seaboard points trade Is dull. The
largo companies remain pretty llrm on
prices and seem well together in hold
ing down the output to market needs.
There aro the usual concessions,
"made by Independent operators," but
there Is nothing to show that there is
likely to bo later on a repetition of the
tendency to sacrlllce prices for a big
tonnage showing that pi e ailed In 1S0S

Exports of Coal.
Tho exports of coal from the United
States.whlch are rather closely watched
Just now, reached in April a total of
only 537,052 short tons, 173,140 tons be
ing bituminous and r,3,912 ton! anthra
cite. The total was an Increase of 149,
242 tons over last year, Canada taking
82,1 15 tons of the gain, and GO.G per
cent, of tho total exports. There was
a small Increase In shipments to tho
West Indies, and Hr.izll took 0,338 ton
this year, against none last year. The
exports to Eutope this jear were 31,
994 tons, ns compared wlln 7,295 tons
last year; a large relative Increase, but
still a very small total. Of those ship
ments 10,237 tons went to France.whlch
took only 1,000 tons last year.
For tho ten months of the fiscal year
ending with April tho total exports
were S,S0t,7S0 tons, showing the sub
stantial gain of 1,731,245 tons, or 42.C
per cent., over the previous year. This
Increase, however, was all in sales to
our two near neighbors, tho shipment
to Canada showing a gain of 1,535,1115
tons, and those to Mexico ono of 147,
C45 tons.
Will Build Its Engines.
Tho new car shops of the Philadel
phia and Heading railway, now under
contract for erection In tho city of
Reading, to replace the repair and
machine shops established when the
line was first oened In the year 1S35,
and that long since became too
cramped for tho purpose Intended, will
be among tho best of their kind In the
country.
The consulting mechanical engineer,
I. B. Paxson, recommended a series of
plans on which the new shops will be
practically built. By these plans tho
Reading management will return, in
part if not altogether, to the construc
tion of tho locomotives used on tho
system, similar to the system followed
by the Pennsylvania in tho great
motive power departments at Altoona.
There was a time when tho Reading
built many, If not all Us own engines
In the Reading shops. It Is announced
that the Heading will return to loco
motive construction, and build most of
its own freight and coal cars.
The new shops will cost $1, 200,000.
The shops will be erected In three sec
tions, and their construction brings
together a plant that the Heading man
agement proposes shall be as complete
as modern methods and Ingenuity can
make It. It Is expected that fully 3,500
men will find employment In the now
and old shops, and It Is stated that In
time the Heading system will be en
tirely equipped from this centre.

Imports of iron ore Into tho United
States In April were 21.726 tons only,
against 42,482 tons last year. For the
ten months of the fiscal year from July
1 to April 30 the Imports were 759,109
tons, which compares with 187,127 tons
In 1690, and 340,429 tons In 188S.
The Jeansvllle Iron Works company,
of Jeanesvllle, Luzerne county, through
Its Denver branch, A. Middlebrook,
manager, has contracted with tho
Hlalto Leasing and Mining company to
furnlbh a compound condensing pump,
capacity 000 gallons per minute, 1,000
feet hlghk This pump is Its latest pat
tern, fitted with Corliss steam valves
for economy of fuel. Tho stroke is
three feet. The condens-r la the duplex
pattern. The company also sold Has
slck Mines company, of Silver Cliff,
Colo., duplex pump, 900 feet lift.
Tho Iron market Is still a waiting
one, but there Is still a better feeling
In evidence. That a lower range of
prices U being established Is generally
admitted, but It Is also felt that a very
largo volume of business Is ready to be
placed as soon ns tho setting of values
Is over. Hesldes this, a heavy export
business Is sure. The Amalgamated
association rate for tho next year aro
now under discussion In committee, and
there will probably be some time spent
In arranging them, as the association
will ask for considerable Increases In
