The Erie Is testing a patent marker
for the rear end of trains on tho Dela

Ingenious mechanical device nnd bids
fair to nupersede the old stylo of mark
ets. During the last few years the loco
motive equipment of tho Krle railroad
has undergone some remarkable
changes. In December, 1895, It had 65
engines that carried about' 160 pounds
of steam working pressure, while today
It has 424 engines that carry nearly
200 pounds. Of the 1,036 engines In
service today on the road, 84 are Vau
clalne compounds and one a Cook two
cylinder compound. There are 206 con
solidation engines with tho Wooten
type of boiler, and 321 engines nil told
with the Wooten boilers now on tho

1. It. o. Dun &
Review of Trado
New York, June
Company's Weekly
will say tomorrow:
The most epr.splcutus feature of domestic news
is that steady proncss toward a lower level of
prices for the chief materials of Industry. Prices
of wool Ime declined and there is much ir
regularity in prices of manufactured woolen
goods.
There Is also more complaint of cancellations,
and on this occasion In cotton ns well as wooten
iwils, with prices ailjie ted to a loner range all
the textile branches might expect greater actlv
ity. The change In hides has made marked
progress also, the averege at Chicago declining
over 3 per cent, for the last week. Orders for
hoots and shoes Ime been reduced mucn more
than fhlpmerts because many works hvl orders
wide h ar- not yet eihinsled.
The fchipments In May have licen smaller than
in any other year since 1S'.2. The decline in
pig Iron continues, grey fcirgc reaching HS.M
at Pittsburg; No. 1 local coke f22 at Chltagi,
No. 1 anthracite and bewemer iil at Philadel
phia and LchUh No. 1 $21 here. Only small
changes hac appeared during the week In prices
of finished products, hut thie arc toward lower
figures. There are current statements that some
of the properties Just taken by the steel sheet
companies have been sold luck to former owners
and that properties of the steel and hoop com
pany will be divided likewise, but it is not at
nil surprising if a few out of po many combi
nations result in the disappointment of some.
Probably a lower quotation for bessemer pig may
be expected by the asociatlcn In the central re
gion for the latter half of the year as the clos
ing of many works owing to reduced demand
may leie these furnaces without full employ
ment. The acceptance of two large contracts
for export, one for 100,000 tons by southern
works, is a good sign.
Failures for the week have lccn 1C0 In the
United States against 143 last yetr, and 21 In
Canada against It last year.

They were accordingly arrested on
the oharge of receiving stolon goods,
a dog being, of course, considered as
goods and were arraigned last night
before Alderman Millar. Caddon
claimed that the animal had given
birth to a litter of pups while In their
possession, but thoy disclaimed all
knowlodgo of this They further con
tended that they were not detaining
the animal and that they had given
instructions to thoie In the houso to
give It up If called for.
The alderman didn't nee It that way,
however, and held each In $300 ball,
which they agreed to furnish this
morning. Who the parties wore who
stole tho dog has not yot been ascertained.
JENNIE BOBBINS ARRESTED.

a disorderly house on Mulberry street
and with wiling llejuor without a li

POOR BOARD MEETING.
Two Parents Put Out of Homo by
Their Children.
Two very pathetic cases were
brought to tho attention of the mem
bers of tho poor board at yesterday's
meeting of that body. The first was
that of Mrs. Mary Cogglns, of Pltts
ton avenue, fceventy years old,
wrinkled, bent and gray. She salil
that her daughter, with whom she has
been living, put her out of the house
yesterday and refused to provide for
lur any longer. The old woman was
In tears and plteously said she sup
possel she'd have to go to the poor
house In her old age. Sho was ad
mitted to the home.
Another case was that of Frank
Grady, of South Scranton, sick and
weak, who has four grown-up unmar
ried sons living at home, yet who has
recently been put out Into the street
and forced to beg. "I've one son,"
said he, "who refuses to work. The
old woman likes him, however, and
she's hunteel mo out so she can keep
him." Tho board rrferied the case to
Director Dlckert and Attorney Scragg,
with Instructions to take steps to
compel the sons to provide for their
father.
