Thcro is sor row of the dull, sodden kind hero to night, for Clymer and his pets wero worsted In today's fray by the sturdy lads that one, Burnham, brought down from Scranton. It has become a tradition In base ball here that any and all offenses of any and all ball players will be condoned if !n return the aforementioned erring Ones will only nerve themselves up to the task of throwing Scranton down good and hard on the diamond. It's a trick, tho performance of which falls with some regularity, but each time Wllkcts-Barre consoles herself with the thought that it was the rob ber umpire or so'me exasperating piece Of luck with which the evil one Is sup posed to occasionally favor his own. It waa a piece of luck today, so the papers of the morrow will tell you, and fio Wilkes-Barre believes tonight. It was in the eighth Inning that Schemer, otherwise "Old Boy," came to the bat. The score was three to four In favor of "Wilkes-Barre and two men had been snuffed out. Nothing dismayed or daunted, Scheff ler picked a ball he thought would suit him, landed on It with all the force he could muster and sent It sailing out Into left field, where Nlcol, crstwhllo pitcher, waa on duty. BUN CAMD OUT. It had been cloudy all the afternoon, but Just about the time Schemer's wil low and the ball came In contact tho clouds wero Jarred apart and out peered the sun. Nicol saw the ball and he also saw the sun, and In trying to make out which was which, the ball dropped some twenty feet beyond him, and by the time It was returned to the diamond Schelllor was calmly resting on the players' bench, after making the circuit of the bases, Knox saw that the sun was still doing Its stunt when ho followed "Sherr" to the plate, and Pitcher Owen sending In Just the kind of a ball that Knox dotes on, ho sent It skimming out to Nlcol, who did a sun dance, slipped and fell, and well, anyway, Knox scored, and "Pop" Merrill, the dean of tho local base ball fraternity, mado some savage remarks abou the sun. "Robbed him of two chances," Tie mut tered between his clenched teeth. "Nlcol could eat them up! Was there ever such cursed luck?" All of which proves that Mr Merrill has a high opinion of Mr. Nlcol's powers ns a sprinter and eater and a rather pov ert.v -stricken regard for tho tact the sun displayed In coming forward so onsplcuousl at such a crucial mo ment. Mclntvm and Doherty went to first on balls, Pirate O'Urlen flew out to Clymer. and ihtn the sun went back behind Its bank of clouds agiln, and the band In the- Midway Carnival next door plajM on. Knoll knocXcd one down toward llrst, which was fielded by Stratton to Pitch er Owen and Shortstop O'Brien went out from pitcher to llrst. When Shuf fler came to the bat there was a dis pute nbout the ball, Umpire Russell refusing to accept the ball that Wilkes Barre wanted to put In play, saying It was not sound. Clymer protested most nrccly, hut finally had to allow One of the balls with which tho game was stsrtd to go In play. It was clean and bright and made a fine target. When his home run was followed by one by Knox the, Wllkes-Hano play ers became badly rattled. Then Mc lntyre and Doherty walked and after getting on the hates tried a double teal. Catcher Barber threw to Cly mer, but It war not accurate and Cly mer missed It He returned the ball to catch Mclntyre at the plate, but his .,., WHEN IN DOUOT, Tisr MKUNti ) ' iPAini JrfrfA W&W HUAin J fjzl . ,. .... fjM- ptifsct, aud Impart health aUor to IBC whola Ulnr All dialos and loiiet are Che r VfiftrrnantHllj, Ucleit patlenH art niODtnV rilrcd.
