Annie Russell's use In three or four months
from the beginning of the season. The point is
that It was impossible for me to present the play
until the time I mentioned had elapsed, bo I
hit upon 'Miss Hobbs,' originally written for
John Dr;w, as a vehicle for Miss Russell mean
while. It mada an unexpected hit, and, of
course, It would be bad business polliy for tnu
to put Miss Russell in anything clso when 'Mis
Hobbs wlll.more than fill out her present season
"Although Mr. Jetome had Mr. Drew in mind
as the central figure ot the play, Miss ltusselt
has made to important a personal success tint
much credit Is due her, when it li considered
that all I did to throw the Interest of tho play
to favor her was that I changed the title to the
name of the character she plays. Mr, Jerome
has already been commissioned to write a new
comedy tor roe, if possible, tbli action.
